Yeah, Simonsons Orion was a beast.
Ostranders J'onn is up there too, but where Simonson made Orion awesome, Ostrander made MM into a Lovecraft-ian horror or something. Although the "chocos" story was all kinds of awesome.

They actually made this specific incarnation of Martian Manhunter in the table top miniature game HeroClix. The sculpt is of him sitting on a throne of Chocos and he actually has an ability named "Unbridled Choco Rage".
Needless to say, it is epic beyond words.
