very similar, just respective to their universes.
Mutates are created for the most part. Mehathumans on the the other hand can inherit their abilities via meta-gene or gain it through circumstances.
Metahumans are more akin to mutants and mutates being one, if that makes sense.

yes, metahuman is just a generic term for all superhumans in DC (notice space aliens arent superhumans as they arent human to begin with)

Mutate is a Marvel term, metahuman a DC one.
If a human gains powers and isn't a mutant, then they're a mutate (this includes Spider-man, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Daredevil, etc.). Basically the difference between a super where something caused their powers (mutate) and where it occurred naturally (mutant).
Metahuman is more inclusive and would cover both.

Doesn't Marvel also use metahuman term from time to time?

It's primarily DC, though I've seen it elsewhere. I don't think at marvel.

So what, it's not an actual vs. thread or anything...
The first use of the term 'metahuman' in the Marvel universe was in the New Mutants Annual #3, written by Chris Claremont, released in 1987.
Stolen from wiki, better?
