Jonathan and Martha

Why can't Jonathan and Martha have a child? It said so in the first episode of smallville. THen they mentioned it again. Does anyone know why?

Its Martha. She has the problem. Thats why she got pregnant after the ship cured her is season 2. I do wonder why they didn't try again seeing as she was cured.
