Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps Respect Thread

This is a thread dedicated to that paragon of power, the Emerald Knight, and the greatest Green Lantern of all time….Hal Jordan, along with his Comrades! This is just a thread to showcase some of his more impressive capabilities throughout history. It is by no means comprehensive, and I welcome any comments or editions you might have.

What I’ve decided to do is to not only showcase Hal’s specific abilities, but also those of his fellow corpsmen. The fact that he was the most powerful of all of them, and was more than once offered leadership should make it fairly clear that anything they could do, he could as well.

The Thread will be divided into 4 main sections; power feats, the second Hal as a physically fit human, the third a smattering of feats for various Corps members and the 4th will be scenes that, for me, encapsulate the character.

The power feat section will be divided up into various sections as well, for ease of use and reference, specifically into ‘raw power feats’ and ‘vs battles’. Something to note about the Raw Power Feats is that, in trying not to repeat myself too often and pad the thread out a lot of showings that ARE indicative of, say, Durability or Blasting Power aren’t going to be included under those headers because they come in the midst of a battle. Taking a shot from Superman or Marvel Marvel might be a great showing of durability, but it is first and foremost a vs showing, and so that is the section it will be under. Such things as taking giant explosions or destroying planets will be under the ‘raw feats’ header. Moreover, the specifically categorized sections will be only for Hal feats. As such, some very impressive feats raw power feats – from sealing black holes to manipulating time – can be found in the “other Green Lanterns” section. I hope this isn’t too much of an inconvenience for you all.

Lifting/Moving feats

Hal, transported through time, encounters a giant speeding planetoid en route to hit the earth. This plantetoid turns out to be THE MOON.

Hal stops the moon from colliding with the earth (at what speeds we don’t know, though if it came from deep space the speed of it must have been impressive) and puts it into orbit around the earth.

Hal teaches Arisia how to create a device to heat a world tilted off it’s axis and freezing to death, and almost instantaneously does the job. The two also prove capable of hauling a crystalline planetoid without too much trouble.

Hal only THINKS that he has caused the planet to be destroyed…It was, in actuality, an illusion created by the Manhunters to discredit the Green Lantern Corps.

I thought it bore at least a mention, since Hal did indeed think he was capable of such a feat on his own, as did pretty much everyone else.

Hal, shorn of his memory, creates a bubble around he and power girl that totally protects them from the most powerful blasts of Sonar (who, at the time, nearly had the whole league on the ropes). While Sonar blasts away, an amnesiac Hal has sex with POWER GIRL in the bubble!

THEN its revealed that the female Doctor Light has ALSO fallen in love with Hal!

Then Hal protects them all from some sort of ultimate bomb set off by Sonar, and masks their life signs from him.

God damn, gets the ladies and gets the job done.

When Dr. Polaris rips a portal in the fabric of the universe itself into the heart of the universe and begins to feed off of the magnetic powers inherent in this strange new dimension, Hal takes on and matches the master magnetist, even as his power increases to the point that he can “destroy planets”.

When his power increases to the point that he is untouchable, Hal uses his ring to pump him so full of power that he is ripped apart.

Rather than outright attacking the creature, he seeks to find out more about its case and finds out that it is, upon further inspection, a conglomeration of beings, meaning that its reaction time is slow and deliberate. He speeds up their neural firings.

This is also notable because it implies that he could simply re-create the plane that had previously been “completely disintegrated”, a heavy matter manipulation feat.

When Legion feeds off the Oan energies inherent in the planet itself, the entire corps is insufficient to the task of containing it and removing it. Hal enters the power battery, feeds off it’s energies directly, and single handily defeats the threat.

The Guardian’s themselves were in awe of the feat, and had up until that point thought entering the battery impossible.

Hal destroys a robotic Sentry created specifically to destroy him by two of the most advanced worlds in the sector. Earlier in the issue we saw it tearing through massive, armed space stations and warships as though they were nothing.

The Triarch were three gods of the Oan race, long forgotten and dead. When they seemingly return to life to destroy the universe, even the Controllers and the Guardians are terribly afraid. In actuality they are not the true gods but instead the ultimate weapon of one of the controllers, sent out and awoken to destroy all the “unworthy” planets in the universe.

Above is Hal’s confrontation with the Triarch in which he actually manages to EFFECT one of them. He also manages to resist being transformed into an Oan AND one of the beings attempt at mind control.

He doesn’t actually defeat them, but he comes up with the plan that saves everyone.

Having analyzed the constrictor earlier, Hal effortlessly recreates it to defeat evil doppelgangers of himself and Barry. This is especially impressive because Hal had to overcome the fact that his fighting edge was gone (all the evil, and therefore aggressiveness, was removed from his body).

Hal overcomes both Anti-Matter and Yellow energy beams coming from all directions using his power and intelligence, a gauntlet that another GL proved incapable of surviving. With just seconds left of charge in his ring, he surrounds his fellow GL in an energy field and removes him from the danger, heedless of the consequences to himself.

Hal easily defeats a rock monster (created by Hector Hammond) and destroys a large asteroid, which was once home to his base of operations in space. He does so with no apparent strain.

When a time displace Rookie Hal comes into contact with Zero-Hour Parallax, he is forced to face him in battle twice. In the first encounter he takes Zero Hour Parallax down with surprise attacks.

In the second he stalemates him for multiple pages, and even causes him pain, stating that their will power are equal and therefore they are on fairly equal terms.

When Dr. Polaris rips a portal in the fabric of the universe itself into the heart of the universe and begins to feed off of the magnetic powers inherent in this strange new dimension, Hal takes on and matches the master magnetist, even as his power increases to the point that he can “destroy planets”.

When his power increases to the point that he is untouchable, Hal uses his ring to pump him so full of power that he is ripped apart.

When the Shaggy Man, currently the General, attacks the League they are essentially impotent to stop him. The entire League is needed to even stalemate the monster.

Hal Jordan then enters the fray, and shrinks the Shaggy Man to the size of a pea (Take THAT, Hulk!)

Hal, insane and dangerously unstable, decides that he needs to reclaim his title as Green Lantern. He takes the ring from Kyle, and proceeds to use the ring to take on the entire JLA and defeat them readily.

While the argument about whether he used his Parallax energies at the time still rages, given that the power only came from his ring hand, and his state of mind, I’d argue that this was just Hal with the ring. You, of course, should make up your own mind.

When Nekron the Fear Parasite, a being from a dimension that sees “Courage” and “Fear” as tangible essences, comes to Earth he faces off against the Justice League, causing within them immense fear (Including the likes of Superman and Barry Allen). They decide to disband the Justice League because of this fear, and only through the actions of Diana do they manage to pull together enough to face Nekron and ultimately defeat him.

However, BEFORE Diana and the rest of the league make their last stand against the Fear Parasite, Hal confronts him. His very presence causes immense pain in the Fear Parasite (He feeds off of fear, courage hurts him) and he very nearly defeats the beast before being felled from behind by a yellow attack.

THEN its revealed that the female Doctor Light has ALSO fallen in love with Hal!

Then Hal protects them all from some sort of ultimate bomb set off by Sonar, and masks their life signs from him.

God damn, gets the ladies and gets the job done.

When, his GL ring DOES fail, while in the middle of a battle with Sonar. Sonar’s weapon actually proves capable of shattering Hal partially…until he calls his reserve Green Lantern energy to heal his injuries, also making him immune to Sonar’s attack.

Beyond his incredible build, and the likehood that he was an accomplished combatant, trained in the ways of war since he was a boy and most feared general on the planet he came from, he proves capable of ripping the prison cell out of the ground, and throwing it at GL with incredible ease (Thusly defeating him).

Hal faces off against a prisoner of the Guardians, deemed one of the most dangerous criminals in the universe and therefore sealed in his own timeline on a distant planet devoid of any human life.

Eventually escaping, he and the rest of the prisoners of the Guardians wage a war against the GL corps. This is the result of his fight against Hal. Given his size and build and reputation, I’d say this was pretty impressive.

When a group of explorers come to this Green Lantern’s home system and being to use their equipment to increase the heat of the sun, the oceans of their world begin to boil. When he confronts them, he learns that they are in fact trying to save their people, and have found a habitable planet in said system, save for the fact that the sun is not warm enough. As a result, the Green Lantern moves his planet far enough away as to negate the temperature difference.

Two GL's, rookies (Even moreso than the GL who died in the first issue of Recharge) guard the area around a star that is heavily unstable.

The star goes nova (Which the GL's survive without issue), and forms a black hole instantly (Thanks to, we can assume, the technology of the Spider Guild). Now, they seem unable to escape the pull of the black hole and even together they can't save the ship also being pulled into the black hole, BUT they SURVIVE the black hole just fine!

As did, apparently, a Korugian GL earlier!

Then Kilowog comes in, actually pulls the ship from harm's way without any notable trouble, and dives in after them, confident in his own ability to survive the trip.

A rookie Green Lantern (This was his first mission) questions the ring on the nature of its abilities and you get the above.

Important to note, Time Travel is certainly considered feasible, but MORE impressive is the idea that he might be capable of shifting the entire time stream, of turning back time. While it might “imperil reality” and THIS rookie didn’t have the sufficient will power at the time, the idea that a greater Green Lantern with a greater will might be capable of it is certainly interesting…….

Hal the Man

This is a section meant to highlight a few scenes that, to me, helped define the character of Hal Jordan, helped not to show him to be the physical powerhouse that he is, but to be a spiritual and mental juggernaut. In short, I hope that this section will make clear why Hal was, is, and always WILL be the best.

I’m starting this section off not with a moment that necessarily shows his unconquerable will, but rather his deep reverence for life, and the trauma caused to him when forced to take a life. I think it really speaks to his purity that, when the order of the day was murder on a large scale, he not only did his job without killing, but did it with distinction.

Stripped of his ring by Dr. Polaris, stranded in the north pole with no protection save for his suit and eventually suffering from snow blindness Hal makes a trek of 100 miles to the nearest shelter, encountering bears and wolves along the way and defeating them all to get back to Coast City and stop the bad guy.

This, to me, is classic Hal Jordan. Fearless, he refuses to accept the dictates of those “better” or “more powerful” than himself. That’s what he’s all about, and always has been about; it doesn’t matter the odds, because he’ll ALWAYS find a way to win against those more powerful than himself.

When Evil Star confronts Hal, he gives him this simple choice; Allow me to turn you to the side of evil with a special ray I have developed, or I destroy a planet. Hal never hesistates, never falters. He sacrifices himself in an instant.

I think this is especially meaningful because it goes merely dying for a cause; What Starthief does to him, what Hal is allowing to be done to him, is the twisting of all his ideals, the fouling of everything he once deemed holy, changing the fundamental person he is, right down to the Soul.

I think that takes an unimaginable amount of courage.

But whats more is that he overcomes the tampering done to his soul through sheer willpower, once again being true to himself.

Hal, possessed by the Parallax entity, sacrifices his life to defeat the sun eater, rekindle the sun to full power and restore the earth to full life and health.

When the Parallax Entity, a creature born at the beginning of sentience, took over the soul of Hal Jordan, not even the Spectre could fully purge him of its taint. Slowly it gained more power, forcing Hal to destroy the Corps and steal the power of the Battery. Now it has completely submerged his consciousness, taking only his form and the Spectre’s power. In one tremendous showing of will power, Hal regains control of the amalgamation, and with the help of the Spectre frees himself from the taint.

A wonderful confrontation with Batman, on the heels of the corps defeating Parallax. Hal defiantly tells Batman that he doesn’t much care what Batman thinks of him, and that he’s content with himself.

However, if it is risking ones life that is to be admired, aside from simply going into battle every day with the forces of evil, Hal has shown countless times that he’s willing to face certain death with a shrug and a smile to help a friend or save an innocent.

When Dr. Polaris nearly kills Pieface with a series of tests, Hal uses the last reserve of his ring, the reserve used to protect him from mortal harm and that is supposed to be unable to be actively used by the ring bearer (No bar to someone of Hal’s will power, apparently) to save Pieface and protect him, opting to get into a fistcuffs battle with the frighteningly powerful Polaris.

In this issue it does indeed cost him his life.

Hal comes back to Ferris after a prolonged exile in space, to find that new research is being done at his old workplace. Somehow, through sheer force of will, Hal is able to make a paper airplane fly using a machine that didn’t even work!

Hal is offered leadership of the GL Corps, but refuses the honor despite the fact that everyone believes he deserves it. I think it is a very interesting dimension to Hal, the fact that he’s never felt the need to be in the spotlight or be the leader or the best. He’s never cared about the power he wielded, only the amount of good it allowed him to do.

I find that very admirable.

I just really think this expresses just how much Hal was loved by his hero community. He comes to the Justice League headquarters for a visit and they fall all over themselves to get him to join. Hal always was a very easy person to get along with and even easier to admire. The above shows that perfectly.

When the Corps’ spirit is nearly broken by the seemingly inevitable end they must meet at the hands of Krona and his dark master Nekron, Lord of the Unliving they very nearly give up to spend their last few moments with their loved ones.

But Hal refuses to give up, and through his heroism and courage he inspires to the Corps to go once more into the breach and die with weapon in hand and battle cry in throat!

Above is perhaps the single greatest Green Lantern and Hal Jordan scene in history. The above perfectly illustrates what it means to be a Green Lantern, and what it means to be a hero. Hal charges headfirst into a realm whose very reality seeks his death and shows what it means to be a Green Lantern.
