It's time I put up or shut up - so -
Les Enfants du paradis (1945)
This film was made - surreptitiously - in Paris under the noses of the Nazis during the occupation. It's a triumph on just about every level, and about one of my favourite subjects - truth.
A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
An airman marked for death is missed by the "grim reaper" and has to fight for his right to stay alive in a celestial court. His instance that he is being tried by heaven is interpreted as mental instability by those around him on earth. Perhaps my favourite film of all time.
The Innocents (1961)
The Blair Witch project of its day - a horror movie with no blood, no FX & no creepy music. An unrelentingly bleak film filled with dread.
A Man for all seasons. (1966)
Robert Bolt writing a script that pits Paul Scofields Thomas Moore against Robert Shaws King Henry VIII. Watching these acting giants go at each other with words is far more brutal and thrilling than any amount of matrix/terminator franchise. This is as good as cinema gets for me.
The Wicker Man (1973)
A thriller and a mystery that works on both levels - and far more besides.
The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
Sean Connery, Michael Caine both at the top of there game in a thinking mans Indiana Jones - directed with staggering panache by John Huston. Classic!
Léon (1994)
Luc Besson + Jean Reno + Gary Oldman + Natalie Portman = The coolest ****ing film in the world.
La Cité des enfants perdus (1995)
A crazed scientict kidnaps children away to his lab where he steals their dreams to try and stop himself aging. The only people who can stop him are a young girl and a mute circus strongman.
Much as I love Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amélie if you live in the USA) - this slice of weird is Jean-Pierre Jeunets masterpiece. |
