"In addition to superhero speed they would throw punches that would minimally break the sound barrier so there would be shock waves. At the same time, they didn't want to lose the force of the punches completely in motion blur (except as a gag with Zod's partner, Faora). They added effects to it by putting mock cones on the forearms, shockwave effects when they hit blows as visual cues."

Zod and Clark were trading punches that broke the sound barrier in Man of Steel. Which makes sense, since we know in the film Superman has the reaction-time to maneuver in-between building while flying those speeds without crashing as seen in that very fight.

As far as current-ish stuff goes, for Marvel, I'd suggest Johnathan Hickman's run on Fantastic Four/Future Foundation. Mark Waid's Daredevil is also good as is Brubaker and all things Captain America/Bucky.

I'm behind on my DC stuff, though.

The best Marvel Books right now are Uncanny X-Force, Fantastic Four, Wolverine and the X-men and Daredevil.

The best DC Books right now are Batman, Swamp Thing, and Animal Man, and maybe Wonder Woman.

The new Aquaman series. Seriously. Just read the first issue, and see what you think.

One of DC's best post reboot books by far, imo.

Neme, have you read fables? If you haven't... do it now... from the beginning... it will satisfy. It probably does me better than any Superhero book.

Well, you came to the right guy for Thor stuff. thumb up

Personally, my favorite run of Thor is hands down Walt Simonson's. He introduces Beta Ray Bill and manages to blend the sword and sorcery/fantasy genre with science-fiction/cosmic. It also has the Frog of Thunder arc, which is one of the most bizarre and epic stories ever told.

Dan Jurgen's run of Thor is also a good one. Similar in tone to Simonson in some retrospect as far as blending fantasy with cosmic undertones (which, imo, is how Thor should always be), it also has the pretty well received "Reigning" arc, which is essentially, Thor taking over Earth for the good of humanity.

J. Michael Straczynski's run on Thor, while relatively short, is also pretty decent. It's definitely more character driven than some other runs, but doesn't lack for action. It's also the debut of the "modern" Thor depiction, with his new armored look and introducing Asgard on Earth. It sets the stage for most of where the current Thor stuff is coming from under Matt Fraction and Kieron Gillen.

Fraction's "Mighty Thor" is...well, it showcases Thor beating the shit out of people while being angry as hell. Personally, I could care less for the characterization of Thor and Odin, but I halfass follow it anyway.

Gillen's Journey into Mystery, on the other hand, is a very good read, though it focuses primarily on Kid Loki with Thor being a supporting character. Definitely worth a look as it hits upon the wider world of Marvel's other pantheons and mystical characters as well as being Loki/Asgard-centric.

Sorry for the short essay on the matter, though lo

[B]Yeah, Simonson's run is about as definitive as you can get for Thor, imo. It really did nail just about everything I personally, and I'm sure a lot of others, like about Thor and his supporting cast.

There are other good runs out there, too, like DeFalco, Thomas, and of course, Lee/Kirby, but those are the ones that stand out, especially to people who want to get to know Thor better. Jurgens and JMS respectively start off volumes 2 and 3 of Thor, so they're both, in their own way, good jumping off points for wouldbe Thor readers.

Also, the short lived mini-series "Thor: The Mighty Avenger" by Roger Langridge, while non-canon, is a really underrated read, too. It's an all-ages friendly book, which initially had me wary of reading, but it's really fun, entertaining, and a light-hearted read, which is a nice change of pace from some of the darker and more serious Thor stories out there.
