KMC Forums - Smith's Transition between M1 and M2 (disclaimer included, plz read)

I wasn't looking for this particular story; I was searching on Google for some Matrix Fanfics, and I came across a more adult-oriented one. However, the beginning of it made a whole lot of sense, as I read and found it to be a good explination of Smith's new abilities between M1 and M2.

It was supposed to be a test run. Nothing fancy. Just... an attempt. An experience to prove to himself, or disprove, what he already believed was true.

Ever since his 'little death' by the rebel’s hand he'd been feeling more human than he'd ever calculated to be possible. Acted like one, too: subtle postures, words and phrases that had never been a part of his behavior were suddenly springing out of his programmed form. It hadn't taken him long before he'd known: simply by deductive reasoning, it came to him that he could no longer work with his colleagues. They were different, now- he was different. He could no longer fit the mold. Oh, he had seen how they were becoming suspicious of him almost from the start: calculating, in their tiny little programmed heads, exactly what had gone wrong with him. And what they could do about it.

But he'd already known, understood by foresight that the only available path for them was to reprogram his system- or, much simpler, to delete him. They were going to do it sooner than later, they were setting him up, every moment deducing his elimination. But Agent Smith had a new feature in his programming that was entirely unique to humans: independence. He found, strangely enough, that he liked having his little edge of humanism, relished in the guilty pleasures of the bizarre and twisted world of emotions. He liked it, and he was going to keep it. This time, for the first time since his creation, he would not follow his designated path: this time he would turn his back on the laws of the matrix.

And he did. Simple as that. It was incredibly easy. One day he simply abandoned his companions, threw-off all connections and swore them as his enemies. To his shock, he discovered that rebellion was fun, a pleasure beyond anything he had ever expected to feel. Better than chasing down rebels or tearing into the humans. None of those things seemed to matter anymore: they were foreign, dull compared to what he felt growing inside. The other Agents' path was the old road, decrepit- and he was ready to make his own personal masterpiece.

The will in his head, free of any and all constraints, had already reasoned what he was going to do. Find the One- devote his existence to finding the man who'd changed his program completely- find him, stalk him. Get his answers, solve the riddles to his own dysfunctional being. And then: overpower. Claim him, make the man a full part of his program. There could only be one supreme ruler, after all- the power, the human greed, had already told him that. He would fight fire with fire. Mister Anderson could not be the one to dominate this little artificial world- he had to be assimilated.

But that would come when the time was right, simply put. There were so many events that had to occur in the meantime, so many assimilations and practice trials. And explorations: investigations into this strange being of self, probing into what exactly had become of Agent Smith and what these new properties were to mean. He couldn't fight properly, he'd learned, until he knew exactly what was going on in his own strange code. Curiosity, the second human evil, had gotten the better of him.

And the newest emotion that had been boiling in him lately, fragile, turbulent and unyielding, had simply been too strong to ignore. His work had continuously been interrupted by a strange feeling, an urge: distinctly human in its origin, and freakish, but one that drove him with lust. The guilty pleasure was in full force now, absorbing his entire being and leaving him a weakened, vulnerable program. But, unlike any one program before him, he was a very, very happy one. He found himself needing something completely foreign, desiring it, hungering, standing within a void that could not be filled by the basic behavior of a machine. There was no choice within his being: he simply had to explore this phenomenon further. And relish it, in every exquisite, morbid detail.

Tonight, he had concluded, would just be one of his ‘experiments,’ a practice. Just to see how far the human influence ran, just to see how much he liked it. A trial run, supposedly nothing more: but one, interestingly enough, that he was holding many expectations for. Human instinct and programmed calculation alike told him the exact same thing: there was something more to this drive than met the eye, something important on an excessively basic level.

In his calculating brain he held one simple belief: that the solution to this puzzle, or lack thereof, could possibly hold the key to final domination.
