I could do without companies that think releasing 27-volume manga at a rate of a volume every three months is somehow a good idea.

Heh, sorry about that. As far as I know it, shounen ai is yaoi minus the legal ages. I'm not into underage boys having sex. Now, if you're just talking about romance between two guys, I don't care. I'm just not interested in stories that focus mainly on shounen ai, or shoujo ai, or yaoi, or yuri, or just plain ai (it doesn't make it any better if it heterosexual either). For eample, I wouldn't be interested in Gravitation, but I don't mind X or Tokyo Babylon... And Sailor Moon's Haurka and Michiru don't bother me either, because the story just doesn't focus on their drama.
YAOI is an acronym for "YAmanashi" (no climax), Ochinashi (no punchline), Iminashi (no meaning). It's not a pretty word. YAOI was made for middle-aged women who were seeking some sort of escapism. Since female roles in Japan confine women, YAOI romances helped them fantasize being outside their female role. >_> That's why some of the guys look like women.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri on Yuri... No one really knows where the name came from originally. I actually do love Utena, but I don't know if that actually counts.
Also, while I'm one the subject of shounen ai, yaoi and so on...
...the term sh¨_nen-ai is not used as often in Japan; the wasei-eigo construction Boys Love (boizu rabu) but usually rendered as English, occasionally spelled Boy's Love or Boys' Love, or abbreviated BL) has largely displaced it, due to associations of the original term with pederasty or pedophilia (which were not borrowed into English usage). (This is doubly ironic, since the similar English term boylove has the exact meaning Boys Love was coined to avoid.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shounen-ai
You know, I was a high school student for 1/2 a year in Japan. I joined the manga club, because all kids are supposed to join clubs and I didn't want to work much (I wish I would've taken Kyuudo now...). Some of the members were yaoi fans, but they were closet fans, because it's not considered healthy for teen girls to be into such a thing. It creeps out the boy classmates too (poor boys). Some people are into slash, while others (like me) aren't.
Shounen ai is yaoi minus the explicit sex, at least in common American internet usage.

so that explains why hALF the guys in Yaoi look like women. sheesh, if I ever saw such a wimpy looking dude....it would not be pretty, lets leave it at that.
Like I had posted,...the term shounen-ai is not used as often in Japan; the wasei-eigo construction Boys Love (boizu rabu) but usually rendered as English, occasionally spelled Boy's Love or Boys' Love, or abbreviated BL) has largely displaced it, due to associations of the original term with pederasty or pedophilia (which were not borrowed into English usage). (This is doubly ironic, since the similar English term boylove has the exact meaning Boys Love was coined to avoid.)
What you said is like saying that you're an otaku but claiming that you mean it in a good way. Even though when otaku is used to mean other than your home, it's derogatory.
Shounen ai isn't as hard core... You're right about that. But how many manga are going to show 12-year-old boy couples having sex with each-other? And how many YAOI doujinshi do have uneraged sex scenes in them? Hmm? Common American Internet usage? What you mean to say is that as far as you know, yaoi isn't inappropriate... If you want to talk about American Internet usage and boys love, you should be calling it "slash" instead... Which is the English word for the fandom.
Now, just look at this site and try to say that YAOI doesn't also encompass sexually explicit boy and boy and sometimes in bad cases underage boy on man action. http://www.boysonboysonfilm.com/news/ Don't try to argue with me just because I don't like YAOI. I have friends who are into slash and even though I don't like it, I don't tell them not to read or watch it. I don't like porn either, but I'm not going to try to say that people shouldn't watch it.
I'm arguing with you because you're wrong. It's not quite the same thing. And you can stop trying to pretend that Wikipedia is some sort of end-all source because anybody can write anything in Wikepedia, and it will stay there unless someone cares enough to change it.
But since we're quoting other people's definitions and pretending it proves something, the definitions I'm using are from the Anime News Network.
