As much as I liked the new film, I can't say I like this pathetically tenuous link so as to introduce the Borg.

The thing I take from the comics that make it canon in the movies is the self healing hull made with adapted Borg Technology.
Even then, that's rubbish. The crew on Voyager were some of the most resourceful, if not the most resourceful, crew seen in canon Star Trek. Why didn't they just "adapt" Borg nannites to heal the hull? Seven was there to help and everything.
However, I tolerate it because the hull of the Narada seems to heal itself so this is the only way to explain that and it is ~canon.
Still, waaaay too much PIS for a Star Trek movie.

There's a pretty big gap between "resourceful action hero" and "dozens of scientists with the backing of an entire empire".

So because it seems to explain that part of the film - with no actual link or proof that borg tech is even used - it's canon?
Sure the potential evidence supports the plot for the film, but there is nothing mentioned or hinted...

The Borg tech isn't really needed to explain the movie.
The biggest hit the Narada took (besides it's eventual destruction) was when Kirk's father rammed his ship up its ass. Then they waited 20+ years before being coming out again, stands to reason the crew could have fixed it themselves.
