Question for the people who have seen both Hairspray movies?

Well I just saw Hairspray the 88 version today.I wanted to see it since I never knew that there was another version of the movie made before last years movie came out.For the people that have seen both movies, which movie do you prefer? surely not the 88 version? if so,why on earth? god I am so grateful they made the new Hairspray movie last year-one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time now cause the 88 version I thought just plain sucked. The only song they played in the whole movie I got into was the opening theme song itself,Hairspray.

Mr Parker, i have seen both movies too and i also think that the second one was way better, not only because the hot and beautiful michelle pfeiffer was there but also because it was a way better movie, althought they were so different.

They are so different because a complex story: at first it was the 1988 version, then it was made a brodway musical based on that movie. And last , it was made the 2007 movie that was based in the Brodway musical, not in the original movie. That is because they are so different and the songs are different.

the broadway musical is 100 times better than the original movie, theres no comparison. The songs in the original movie just plain suck except for the opening theme song HAIRSPRAY.I notice the person who put in the vote for that horrible hairspray 88 was too embarrassed to say they did so. laughing

I've only seen Waters' version. It was.....okay, I guess. I really have no desire to see the remake.

I prefer Waters' more deviant films like Serial Mom and A Dirty Shame.

I guess that was the 88 film then with Ricki Lake? Dude your making a HUGE mistake, the remake is 100 times better than the original 88 film, hands down,no contest.I went into that movie expecting to not like it.I knew NOTHING whatsoever about it,had no idea it was a musical or anything,I just wanted to see it cause I am a huge fan of Michelle Phieffer.I did not think I would like it at all.I went into the movie thinking-Hairspray? man this sounds like a kiddie flick, this is probably going to suck.oh well Michelle Phieffer the only reason I want to see it is in it so it will at least be worth it to see the scenes that she is in.Little did I know at the time, that not only was Michelle amazing in the film, but the ENTIRE cast was amazing as well in all their roles. There was not one weak link in the casting for the roles in the movie.Plus the story is far more interesting and entertaining with the musical numbers.god I cant believe people have put in votes for that horrible 88 movie. sick sick sick

what I am REALLY excited about though is this week I am going to new york cause I want to see yankee stadium-the house that Ruth Built, before it gets torn down, and while we are up there,we have made reservations to see HAIRSPRAY on broadway up there. Happy Dance that alone is every bit as exciting to me as seeing seeing yankee stadium before it gets torn down cause Hairspray 07 is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

John Waters probably agrees with you as well. Maybe that's why he even made a cameo in the latest Hairspray movie.

Personally, I thought it was a decent musical. It was entertaining, but not as totally amazing as everyone said it was. Too hyped.

yeah I know.I knew from the very beginning of the movie I was going to love it like crazy. The very first song-BALTIMORE,just makes you want to stand up and start dancing,it so much sets the stage for the rest of the entire movie.Thats what i am going to do friday when I see the stage production is after that song, stand up and cheer and yell-bravo.This movie had such an impact on me last year like no other movie since Grease. When i was little,I was always singing the songs of grease and pretending I was danny zuko.well this movie had that same kind of effect on me that I hadnt experienced since then.I was so much into that movie last year,I would go down the aisles of the grocery store and sing out loud the songs in the movie. big grin

The other thing that makes this movie far more interesting for me than the original did is Amanda Bynes was just amazing as Penny in her portrayal of her.Not to mention that she is just plain gorgeous. The girl that played her in the 88 version was just plain awful I thought. Not only was she not pretty at all,but HER portrayel of her,I thought was really bad.She made her look like a real idiot where Bynes portrayed her as kind of an airhead, but not to the point that she came across as an idiot.I found that actress that played her in the 88 version to be a real weak link in the casting of that movie where like i said before, there wasnt one weak link at all in any of the casting for the remake. They were ALL amazing in all their roles.

I don't know why, well maybe I do, but I have these visions of you, Mr. Parker, popping the Spider-Man dvd into the player juuuuuust to give it another shot, maybe, just maybe you'll finally put aside it's flaws and actually enjoy it this time around without getting frustrated. About ten minutes into it, I see you going mad, throwing popcorn at the ceiling and yelling at the TV. After your rant, you take the DVD out and throw it across the room. Then, you put in Hairspray, you sit back, smile and sing, the dance around the room in orange underpants, and all is well. You've found your solace. stick out tongue

YESSS for the remake, Mr. Parker!!! oh my gosh, the 88 version is TERRIBLE. I couldn't even sit through the second half of it. Plus, i'm a little biased because of the whole Zac Efron factor in the 07 version...

also the fact that I LOVED John Travolta as Edna, and I love Brittany Snow and Michelle Pheiffer, and ESPECIALY Christpher Walken....and Amanda Bynes....heck, I'm in love with the whole cast! They couldn't have done better!!

Hairspray 07 is on my top ten movies as well :-)

well I just got back from new york this past week and I totally LOVED the broadway musical stage production. The stage production is even better than the movie believe it or not.George Wendt played the mom.He was just hysterical. He had me rolling in the seats. laughing laughing laughing out loud rolling on floor laughing laughing

Yeah I toally agree with everything the last poster said as well.Everybody in last years movie was just amazing in their roles.by the way Hiker,I disagree big time with you that the movie was overhyped.I would say if anything,it was very UNDERhyped.Like I said before,I didnt even know anything about the movie when i saw it.Had no idea it was even a musical like i said.I would say thats very little hype at all for the movie. Now heres some movies that you could call overhyped. The next Terminater movie,Its ALREADY getting trailers in the theaters one year before its due to come out, same with the Get Smart movie.same with Batman 89.The best thing about that horrible movie was the previews itself. It was a boring snoozefest. mad It looked great from the trailers but again, that was the best thing about the movie was the trailer.
