seriously? is that really true? if so then I'm sure that many people (myself and most of my friends included) are going to be pissed about this.
so manga, anime, and games are the only things that they're banning when there's plenty of other things going around that are supposedly just as bad or worse. that's dumb, why would they ban or edit out two very profiting industries like that (I'm counting manga and anime as one inudstry)?
really, what the hell? I mean, they're just pretty much hurting themselves in the end given how much of a fanbase Manga/anime and games have.
Cause we all know that once a person reaches 18 years of age they are completely unaffected by violent media and therefore can enjoy reading all the murder and rape as they please.
Seriously though, this won't last regardless. It's too stupid to last. Not that it affects me in the slightest, but whatever.
It's a cute read but as Kandy said, it only affects younglings so I don't care. I suppose I could care if I want my children to read violent media -or it could affect the markets, but seriously, they won't stop printing One Piece because of something this dumb-, but then again, I could just buy it for me and hope my kids are smart enough to read it without my permission.

I agree with wakkawakkawakka. I'm not 18 yet either.
so that's what it said. I must have missed that part in the article. and now that I've calmed down a bit, I agree with you guys. it's not the end of the world (although if such a thing affected me the way I originally thought then I could kiss an almost frequent hobby of mine goodbye) and it is a stupid law. wonder if/when the law is revoked or whatever.
We will see more and more digital works occuring. I would like to see more subscriptions to digital services because I am tired of region specific restrictions.
That goes for violent, criminal, or other types of stuff that some people hate. I am also tired of the anti-violent game crowd carding me everytime I purchase a rated M game: that's their only way of protesting games that they think I shouldn't play when I'm obviously 17 or older.
Peeps, let me explain how this law affects us here in America:
It doesn't.
This law, regulates sale of manga with mature themes to those over 18. That's fine by me, I wouldn't want people selling hentai to my kids under the excuse that "its just a cartoon!". When the manga is licensed in the US, this law is of no force; the US distributors can decide what age to classify it as, and there are no laws in place that give those age classifications the power to actually restrict sale. In all likelihood, all that we'll see happen is that ecchi manga will be classified as 18+ in Japan, and will be sold in the US exactly as they always were.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe your post fails to see how the ability to have "market penetration" will directly impact sales of otaku related items. This is the entire point of the thread/complaints about the law.
Why can not the otaku items simply be rated?
Also, I've read Ecchi manga such as Tenju Tenge: shouldn't there be a "mature" section with a "prove of DOB" verification process to keep 8 year olds from buying what I, myself, would consider to be somewhat pornographic? (You could call my attitude generally "ero" to begin with, but some of that seinin stuff is pornographic at parts)
That seems like a much simpler solution rather than banning stuff from non-adult-licensed ships.
