Chewbacca's DEATH in Vector Prime

I was very surprised and disturbed that Chewbacca got killed off in Vector Prime. Chewie was one of the main characters, it remains to be seen how this will affect other stories.

I think part of the reason for his death is to give Solo's character a nedw angle.

The whole ethos of his character had been draining away over the last 10 year (novel time) since he married Leia and had the kids. He was desperately in danger of becoming a background character with very little to do apart from ferry the other around in the Falcon.

I think that The New Rebelion in 1996 was a key example of this. Han Solo was a joke to his former peers and for me a evry uninspiring story from his point of view.

I am not happy about Chewbacca dying but I am proud that someone had the guts to have a main character perish in a battle or fight because if this did not happen you could sit confidently in a movie theatre or reading a book saying no good person will die so this movie should have a happy ending...blah blah blah I have heard it before. Many movies, books, have had main characters die because it alters the movie/book sequence and gives the series a more tasteful feeling. Look at Qui-Gon's death and the main character of Gladiator (I have seen the movie twice it just slipped my mind), Mel Gibson in Braveheart, all three are excellent movies in my heart. So suck it up and use your imagination.

Chewbacca's death brought us back to the grim reality that death is all to common. Most of us thought that Good ol' Chewie was invincible and had many years left to live (he was only middle aged at two hundred years). We got so use to seeing or reading about him that we didn't pay much attention to him as the years went by in the New Republic. His sudden death showed the other characters (and us) not to take life for granted.

Well, you could have nocked off someone like Ackbar, Wedge or Lando before stickin it to the Wook.

Lando is far to agile to be killed in any way, he is far sneakier than Han and even the most prime bounty hunter. Ackbar would be my pick if I MUST pick one. Wedge is the best pilot, and it would be hard losing him.

Re: Someone else important will get killed off

Don't worry, someone else who is important will get killed off in a future novel.

Wedge retired, he could easily be hunted.

Retired doesn't mean he still can't fly. Trust me, he's a no-hitter wink

Re: Re:Wedge

Lando is the only black character prominently featured in the OT and in the books. I don't think any author would have the courage to nock him off. But he would be a lot easier to kill then Chewie, yet him and Wedge are played by more important actors whose human faces we actually see in the movies. So they'll be around for a while.

Re: Re:Wedge

Hehe, I think color has nothing to do with this. And you never know who else was pertained to as "black" we never hear "Oh yeah, Mara Jade was a caucasian", they never tell us.

Re: Re:Wedge

You know that's rediculous, Mara is white. I was merely saying that if an author was torn between nocking off "boring white guy" Wedge and "only black guy" Lando, Wedge would be outta there.

Re: Re:Wedge

I've gotta say that Chewie dying was BAD!

I don't mean him actually dying, I mean every good story has a few main characters killed off every now and again, but I'm pissed off about HOW he was killed. No stormtroopers or bad guys shooting at him to kill him, just a big f**king planet falls on his head!

Whats the justice in that?!? (I also reckon Anakin should have just rammed chewie into the ship as he was taking off and worry about fixing him up later...surely being a pilot like he is he could do that!)

Also no body for the funeral... sad

Re: Re:Wedge

Chewie should have gone down under a sea of the white troops, tearing them limb from limb untill their massive numbers prevailed. His death was kinda dissapointing.

Chewie's death

I think the way that he died was good a way as any. He died saving hundreds of lives, including Han and Anakin and it took an entire moon falling on him to kill him. Thats a cool way to go.

Re: Chewie's death

First of all, I'd like to say that I approved of Chewie dieing in VP. Its HOW he died and what's happened since then that I have a problem with. The only reason Chewie was killed by that moon is because they had to save just a few more people on Sernpidal. First there was a shuttle trapped, and then a little kid under some rubble. Not that there's anything wrong with saving them, but all I've heard over the net and publications is how Chewie valiantly died saving Han Solo's son, Anakin, when in fact he died saving a few dozen star wars ghosts who are never going to be seen again. They could have left at any time, when they realized the moon was getting close.

The other problem I have with Chewie's death is how it was supposed to shake up the star wars universe and make everyone fear for the character's lives. Well, now five books later, there's been one semi-important character death, and that's Elegos A'kla, who was introduced just recently in the EU. I was really hoping some more characters would drop off eventually, so that Chewie's death would actually mean something.

"Yub yub, commander." -Various Lt.Kettch personaes
