When Luke decided to jump of that.........thing in Empire strikes back after having his hand sliced of, couldn't Vader have used the force to stop Luke from falling?
I can't remember if it's true or not, but I thought I recalled reading that Vader did try but the wind was too powerful to haul Luke back up (I'll have to snoop around & see if that's true or not).
Although Vader may have been surprised by Luke jumping off. My two ¢.
Vader was probably to tired to use his force powers, to stop Luke from falling. And remember Luke got a good hit on his arm. But I guess if you really think Vader could have/ would have, then maybe this is a plot error.
I think there are a couple reasons he didn't stop him. (In order from least likely to most likely)
1) (This is a poor one) Luke could have even been using the force to stop Vader from pulling him back up. Yeah, I know, really poor, but hey...
2) Have we ever seen the force used to lift other living things? (except for jumping which I think is more have the force energize your muscles, not actually lift you up) If there is a time, then obciously this idea goes down the toilet, but I can't remember any time.
3) He was caught off guard. He figured that he had him right where he wanted him, but obviously he was wrong.
4) I think what is most likely is what he told the Emperor, "He will join us or die." I don't think Vader expected Luke to survive. I mean there was hardly any times that those great of jumps were survived (if any), let alone the fact that he had a severed hand. Vader never finds out that Luke was trained for a week or so by Yoda. He still thinks that Luke learned all he knows from Obi-Wan, so he didn't think he would be NEAR powerful enough to survive... or LUCKY enough. Vader didn't care if Luke died or not really, just as long as there wasn't a Jedi to appose the Empire.
I think your 3rd and 4th are the best answers the 3rd is probably most likely, because Vader wanted to deliver him alive to the Emperor no matter what (in carbonite).
Definetitly 3rd and 4th are the closest. But we DO see someone use the Force to lift a living being. i.e. Dooku lifting Obi-Wan, despite the fact he was choking him at the same time, he was still lifting him.

He didn't mean lifting things in general, but living beings.
