Take Evasive Action

I have a question:

In The Empire Strikes Back, there is a scene where you are shown the inside of a Star Destroyer with another going by the window. Someone yells "take evasive action" and the people throw themselves into the walls.

What exactly happened there? Did the Star Destroyers collide or was it just a close call?

I've also wondered this too. I would presume that they don't collide, as the force of them even tapping each other at the side would be rather catastrophic I should think. I don't know why they shake like they do, I think it might have something to do with the shields and the way they might sort of repel each other. That's about the best I can do. Anyone else got any ideas?

Well, my theory is that when the officer yells "Take evasive action!", the SD's do just that and swerve violently out of each others way, hence making everyone on board topple around like rag dolls. (well, not quite!)

If they HAD hit, the officers on board that ship would have all died, or there would have been major carnage!

Indeed it does. <Darth Daft picks up the topic and carries it all the way to the Ep1+OT Forum.

To quickly move a ship of that size to avoid a collision would definatly throw everybody off their feet. I don't think Star Destroyers were built for that kind of manuevering.

Indeed, they can't maneuver in that way!
And if they collide, they would explode so the explanation I would bring is that the shields hit eachother and because they took an evasive action they hit the shields because if they didn't they would fly through the shields

That's doubtful; shields don't seem to have much effect on physical objects. I think it was just the inertia of their emergency manoeuvre.

but surely a Star Destroyer can't maneuver like that!
And remind that the A-wing he flew through the ISD II had no shields AND the ISD II lost his just a few moments before that.

Where do you see that they don't have effect?

In TPM. Physical things just walk straight through shields with only a slight slowing.

And what do you mean they can't manoeuvre like 'that'? Like what? It wasn't as if it pulled a handbrake turn.

are you refering to the spacebattle? or that Anakin could fly through the hangar?

with "that" I think I misunderstood something, I thought you ment that the guy screamed "Take evasive action" and with a sharp turn they didn't hit the other

It wasn't a 'sharp' turn. The ship is still clearly visiblre through the porthole and it is not as if you see it spinning on its axis as the MF flies away. They only JUST miss.

Yes, Anakin flying through the hangar, the droids walking through the Gungan shield... shields don;t stop physical objects with any effectiveness.

that's exactly what I was saying with "that", that they couldn't turn that good to evavade...

The Gungan shield was for keeping shots outside, otherwhise, why would they carried those blue bols with them?

And for Anakin, that's the hangar where the ships fly out, so there is no shield there, otherwhise the fleet couldn't go outside

The fleet CAN go outside because they can fly through the shields because they are physical... and you make an assumption that the gungan shield is some sort of weird 'shots only' thing, while the more logical assumption is that ALL shields work as such. That is how it has been presented to us.

How, exactly, do you think the Imperials were able to attack Hoth? The shield could stop any bombardment but it couldn't stop them landing troops, walking to the generator and blowing it.

And the Star Destroyers didn;t have to turn very hard to miss. Just on a ship that size any turn is going to cause a lot of unsteady feet.
