Classic Strange was terrified that Mauvias was awakened and said he was unsure if he could stop him. Heck way back when Mauvais fought the Ancient One so don't see how he couldn't clear this to be honest

In 1789, the Gods of the Arctic and that era's sorcessor supreme worked together to imprison Mauvais. During that time the Ancient One was the SS as he gained the title shortly before 1666. So unless he temporally gave up the title it should be the Ancient One.

Because it was directly said, "During the French Revolution of 1789, the gods worked with the eras Sorcessor Supreme to cause Mauvais downfall, cursing him with an immovable existance..."

Fun tidbit, Mauvais actually tried to even conquer Canada in 1789, you don't piss off the Gods of the Arctic.
