Well it depends, what's the location? However if Sidiois is really going for kill than he wins due to,his force powers and he could easily blitz either one or ragdoll Anakin and take Mace down.

Assuming this is the Vapaad Battle in the chancellor's office, except Anakin makes the other decision and helps Mace...

Sidious is pretty badly out of position by playing possum trying to convert Anakin. If that doesn't work, he might be too badly out of position to prevent Anakin from slicing a hand off by surprise and letting Mace finish the job.

K, disagree with me if you want.

Here's what should've happened:

Anakin stops Mace from killing Palpatine without killing him.

His force advantage is too big on neutral ground. Sidious wins.

Well, barring the Prophecy of the Chosen One, this:

Remember how he took down kolar, and tin down before mace could even react? Even if you don't take the "fading in and out of existence" as his actual speed he could still blitz at least one in my opinion due to what we saw in the movie, and even the book before the "fading in and out of existence. He took down 1 or 2 Jedi masters before mace coils react so with that he coils defintily take mace out due to superior speed. However even if all of that is wrong his considerable force advantage will win him this. Being on neutral ground he no longer has to worry about slipping or having to slow down to a slippery area like he did in the novel. We have seen force weilder said of lower level calbiers break through Anakins force sheild. These individuals include Barris Offee, Assaj Ventress, Count Dooku(lower level than Sidious) in several occasions. So with that he could easily ragdoll Anakin, or mace, and to a stretch both at the same time. He could definitely take each one by themselves but it woudl be close on whether he can take both at one time.

Did it really happen just too fast for Mace to even react?

Or was Mace just taken by surprise, and in the wrong position to aid Tiin and Kolar anyway?

He could ragdoll Anakin. But not Mace. Mace can after all compete with Sidious as per Lucas.

That being said, I agree Sidious's Force powers are a too big advantage over Mace in a fair 1 v 1 in an open environment.

I guess really it all depends on how you choose to look at it. Really I personally don't see any reason for him to be surprised due to all the clues to how powerful Sidious is. Knowing he's the master of Dooku someone on his level, being able to hide from him Yoda and everyone else for 13+ years, and killing 3 celebrated swordsman in seconds. However he defintily attacked one before mace could react so with that he could defiantly take down mace possibly, however it comes down to your point of view.

He can compete with mace in lightsaber combat. Not force powers? Remember in the story how Sidious uses a force push on mace showing he can break through his sheild.

If Anakin is down Sidious can always bend maces blade back like he did in the novel. laughing out loud
