Thanos is more of a sad or tragic character imo. Because think about it this way. He was born different and considered ugly by everyone else, lived a life of relative solitude with essentially no pleasure. Then he finds Mistress Death, falls in love with her, gains ultimate power, then gets rejected and loses it. From that point on (including now) he just keeps getting rejected and used as some kind of cosmic whipping boy imo. Mistress Death is kind of a *****, she only leads Thanos on when she needs him to get stabbed or something. Don't get me wrong, he's quite the sociopath, and he can be capable of evil, but Thanos is actually more of a sexually frustrated, recently suicidal, somewhat apathetic and nihilistic character than a "god of Evil".
Darkseid on the other hand is a ruthless bastard and doesn't come from a much better family either. He killed his own mother because she killed his girlfriend. Then he "killed" his brother Drax to get the Omega force. Since then he's been on a role. Corrupting people, killing people, torturing people. Most of the time for no other reason than he can and it's fun to him. Most characters don't like to refer to themselves as "evil" but he refers to himself not just as a practitioner of it, but the god of it, and apparently every other New God agrees with him. It also doesn't help his case as a good person that he actively plotted and succeeded in shooting his first born child Orion in the head by firing a radion bullet through time and also kills his second born son Kalibak like every other appearance.
So imo, Darkseid isn't just evil, he's also a dick. Thanos can be pretty mean, but not so much like the former. I think that they're both highly intelligent, but I just see a difference in the level of evil acts. With all that said, personally, I think their both douchebags.
Since 2011, things have happened to sort of put much of this to doubt. For example, we now know that Thanos went on a cosmic baby making spree, thus bringing into question the notion of sexual frustration. And the subsequent systematic killing of each of them is quite evil. We know that Thanos butchered his own mother and recently disembowels his father. And Cates is clearly seeking to establish evil.
Calling Thanos "nihilistic" doesn't really fit. Nihilism means you think there is no objective meaning to anything. Thanos clearly considers death to be deeply sacred. A nihilist would find Thanos' worship of death to be strange. Death is neither "good" nor "evil", because there is no such thing as "good" or "evil" to be. Death just is, and is as meaningless as everything else from Coca-Cola to belly-lint. That attitude would horrify Thanos, to whom death is the wonderful and sacred destined end of all things.
