The history of the potato

I noticed a thread about cheese - and much as I love cheese, it doesn't come anywhere near the potato in my affections. The potato is by far the foodstuff that thrills me the most, and here's why.

Who knows where it all actually started - but what we do know is that some 7000 years ago pre-columbian farmers were cultivating potatoes. 15,000 feet up in the thin air of the Andes amongst fluctuating temperatures and poor soil the potato dug in and flourished. The Incas domesticated the tuber and cultivated many shapes, sizes and colours of potato ranging from orange, pink, blue, green, brown white and black. The fact that from a crop of potatoes one could keep one single fruit - let it germinate and plant it and it would quickly produce a whole new bushel seemed like a miracle to the Incas. They treated the potato as a gift from the gods dedicating ceremonies to it and (quite rightly) making it an object of worship.

The Spanish hauled it over the Atlantic around 1570 to Europe but it was still considered a food for the poor, used to feed hospital inmates. It remained a curiosity cultivated by botanists right through till around 1780 when those canny Celts the Irish adopted it as a crop. Full of vitamins and hardy as all hell the potato can feed 10 people per acre of land. Remarkable!

And that's just the beginning of the thrilling story of the potato, I may continue this exciting tale later….

Sorry to hear you have a headache Shellbert. An old folk remedy for headaches is to lay down and put half a potato on your forehead.

Is it true that the potato has more vitamin C than an orange? If so, I want to be able to purchase potato juice at my local market. ✅

Z > thanks hun *sighs*

Vodka is nasty 😘

Tequila , Rum or Grand Marnier 👆 much better

Yes the potato is packed with vitamin C: Freshly dug the tater has 30mg of vitamin C per 100 gms. Think about that people. 30mg per 100gms.

Even after long term storage it only drops to 8 mg per.

Hmm, I never knew that. Thanks Z! 🙂

Ok where were we? 1570..Europe.. 1780 Ireland.

Actually thats too much of a leap: Much happened to the tater in those 200+ years. Despite the fact that the potato was a wonderment people on mainland Europe viewed it with suspicion.

It's a member of the nightshade family which have always had bad press. (The leaves of the Potato plant are poisonous! Fact!) And our chum the potato was thought of as unholy, primitive and (get this) unhealthy (those fools!).

Finally one of the great Potato heroes, Frederick the great of Prussia got his chum King William of Germany on board with his potato plan and they began to introduce the potato across Germany. 1740 was a great year for potato lovers as it was finally being cultivated properly as a staple crop. Hurrah!

If someone had told you a few scant months ago that you'd be posting in Mr Zeros thread about potatoes, pandering to his psychosis - agreeing with him how great they were - you'd have thought them quite deluded.

Its a funny old world.
