thats why i go for silent hill and doom 3..silent hill has very realistic fog and stuff...doom 3 is like all realistic, bodys dont go threw walls when they die they fall against it...u can punch bodies off the ledge and they fall like they really would in real life...and when its hot or cold you can tell but resident evil doesnt show as much as this to my opinion
Silent Hill hands down. Walking through foggy streets with your radio crackling static to warn of hidden enemies and then the whole town going to hell (literally).
The SH series is more psychological mind-screw type of horror, whereas the RE series is more jump out scare you with loud noises sort of thing. Doom 3 seems to be the middle ground of the two.
All of these games/series are worthy of anyone's attention. Well.. maybe not SH4, that was a bit weak.
Right from the start of SILENT HILL, the sudden noises, the graphics and the music that went with it all... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh!!!!
When you are in the sewer system in the first game, that dripping water is actually the music score for that part of the game, and those groans coming from the tunnels.
the problem is, is people judge doom 3 because its on xbox, play it on pc trust me, they totally screwed up doom 3 by putting it on xbox because of the multiplayer screws up the story totally, the story is only 1 chosen one is supposed to kill satan, but multiplayer screws it up because how the hell is there 3-4 chosen ones? and it ruins the scare tactics, the pc with headphones on loud enough where it sounds real, and ur in the dark ALONE, then you feel like ur there because every single thing makes a sound and there is gravity omg what kind of game has gravity where things fall against the walls instead of threw them and things fall off of edges by their weight, if the legs carry more weight then just their arms dangle down, and things crawl all over the walls!! omg imma go play it now lol
Silent Hill 1 was the best, you had the school levels, hospital levels, it created an atmosphere that made you want to progress through the game with extreme caution also with the company of being s*%t scared. Parasite Eve was just as scary, the desert level ruled, that creeped me out, as for doom-it has its moments.
I hated Silent Hill 2, I liked 3 up until the part with the EMPTY construction yard, huge turn off. I was waiting for some freaky shit to come out of the walls and grab me. Resident Evil is always good for scares, not 4 though, or the Outbreak series, but the originals, especially REmake.

I say if ur lookin for somethin to take you around the horror fest block go for doom 3. u get great almost real to life graphics, pulse pounding action and heart stopping monsters beyond reality. I am still a fan of SH and RE series but they kinda got slow. With doom 3 you get non-stop action. Sh and RE are great at shadows and dark, but look at doom 3. U CAN'T SEE MONSTERS IN SHADOWS WAITING TO JUMP OUT AND RIP UR HEAD OFF! and u don't have any warnings like in SH for upcoming monsters. try this at home with doom 3. take 4 pieces of glass (any kind) place one in front of ur tv one on each side and one in back of u (trust me this will scare the SHIT outa u!) now turn off the lights put on head-phones, shut the door and play doom 3. the effect will leave you HORRIFIED. the glass sheets will reflect the images on to each on, thus making u feel like u are in the game. u will see a monster and it will look like 4 coming at u from all different angles. i literally ran from my room when a demon baby came flying around a corner. so try this with doom 3. you can still try it with SH or RE they won't be as scary but they will sure as hell give u nightmares!
Silent Hill 1 and 2; 3 was pretty good, too, but it wasn't as gripping as the first two, and I hated the ending ("Blonde's have more fun?" What the hell, people?). Silent Hill 4 ... um ... it had a nice introductory sequence, I guess, and some of the notes in the orphanage were kind of disturbing, but that was a pretty feeble game.
Nobody's mentioned Fatal Frame yet, so I will--you all need to play that game.

Silent Hill 4 was more of a paranoid, heatpounding scare. Having ghosts chase after you really made you just want to run like mad. I'd say Silent Hill is the best scariest game ever... on the list. lol
I was going to mention Fatal Frame. I've had to stop multiple times while playing. It deserves the most frightening game title.

Man, the first Silent Hill was so damn atmospheric, few things are creepier in the gaming world then hearing the radio cracking, thus knowing a creature was near, but not knowing the exact location.
Something else that made the game so effective was teh lighting. At the time it's lighting effects were bar none the most effective use of lighting ever in a game. In the school lvl it was pitch black, and the little light around your neck only let you see a few feet in front of you, you'd hear the radio crackling, you'd be walking around, then all of a sudden a little baby demon would be right in front of you. Scary stuff.
The game also really jsut messed with your mind, more so then any other horror game. It was twisted, macarbe, and disturbing. Few things are creepier in the gaming world then the shadow babies in the school bathrooms that would be seen for a couple of seconds then disapear.
I remember when the game first came out, I was playing it at like 2am in teh front room, the only one up, all the lights in the house were out. Bed time crept up, so I turned the game off and I sat there realizing how creeped out I was. I was afraid to move or get up off of the chair, freaked out that I'd be attacked by baby demons or see a shadow baby. It was at this moment that I realized that this game was unlike any other horror game out there, it was actually horrifying and stayed with you long after you turned it off.
