BackFire I see your point. But I dont think that Platton was a good illustration of Vietnam. Maybe in the battle front but not as a war as whole. For a better war film about Vietnam I think that Apocalyse now is much more better. Also The Killing Fields is a good movie that portrays the cruilty of the Vietnam war. The story is also much more captivating. After all it is based on true events that happen to those journalist during the war.

Apocolypse Now suffers from the same problem as SPR does, silly storiline. Platoon is the only film that is realistic in every possible way.

Well Ush The Longest Day is one of the best historical movies ever made about WW2.

You want real war movies, you have to go back a few decades. Sands of Iwo Jima, Patton, Tora!Tora!Tora!, Bridge over the River Kwai, Casablanca, Paths of Glory, Where Eagles Dare, etc.

I agree Windtalkers look so good, and so original, but that movie was a disaster! I was really looking forward to it. I blame Nicholas Cage for butchering what could been a great film. For me SPV was okay.

I much prefer war movies like The Dirty Dozen, The great Escape, Kelly's heroes, and Hamburger Hill.

Apocalypse Now was based on Heart of Darkness and so it was never meant to have a 100% realistic plot; it probably should not be compared as a pure war movie to others.

Of course, Platoon and Das Boot are realistic for the same reasons...

The reason they went to get "Ryan" is purely a propaganda move. Once people found out that people died to save a brother from death, people would believe in the war...and it would make the United States Army look very good. And by the way, a group of brothers dying did actually happen.

That's true, but I still think it was general G.I. tact to go on search and rescues for last surviving enlistees of families.

I suppose I hope that it's(or was) general tact to go on special missions like that. I thought the movie did a nice job of portraying the soldiers' frustration of their mission while they were searching for Ryan. It must have been tough to complete a mission that really strayed from the real purpose of why they were there.

I actually liked the movie a lot.

I like platton alot BackFire. But didnt you think that Marlon Brandon and Martin Sheen performances were good? I love the dialogues they are good! And the suspence near the end was fantastic! dont you agree that both actors had great performance?

Lawrence fishburn, Duvall also had great performances dont you think those should count in as well? The performances made Apocolypse Now a great film.

the movie sucked, it made the germans seem like pussies. I would like for steven to explain to me how the germans conquered much of europe, much of north africa, and went all the way to the gates of Moscow but could not defeat 30 american soldiers when the germans had about 500 soldiers and tanks. His band of brothers show is equally retarded. He is racist towards germans, it is as simple as that.

Well, they did conquer much of Europe, and did go to moscow, and north africa (which was pointless). But, at the time of Normandy where SVP takes place, the Germans were somewhat on the heels of thier feet. The allied forces were attacking and taking back land. and the soviets were doing the same. and also if you watch the movie again.. you would realize its just not 30 people or whatever the number you think it is, but actually alot more... Spielbergh gave importance to the characters of the film. and war is fought by individual man making a difference....a tad different than world war 1.

and how is he racist?
because he showed germans as the bad guys, or always killing them or what?? why is he?

In schindler's list, which is about the Holocaust. Nazi's did actually do that.. and to be realistic as possible, he had to somewhat make them bad.
and SVP, umm the movie is about allied forces against germany, because thats what happened.

I didn't think Saving Private Ryan was overrated at all, it was one of the best war movies I've ever seen, even though when you really think about it, the plot makes no sense. I don't understand how this movie didn't get the best picture award back in '98, the award went to Shakespeare in Love.
