Excluding resident evil four. Resident evil games have never done very much in the way of creating a terrifying story. The first 3 silent hill games were all written very well. The story was intertwined with the gameplay better than any other game. There are few scenes from resident evil games that i will remmber for giving me the creeps, but the entire experience of silent hill was frieghtening good fun.

Yeah, Resident Evil used to really have me going as a teenager to no end, I loved it. 4 I didn't find scary at all, aside from the first Regenerator due to the breathing noise, but still an incredible game. Silent Hill just has a complete f***ed up thing going for it. Lately Haunting Ground has kept me on high-end & annoyed due to me not being used to a horror game with this level of realism.

3 has multiple endings if you didn't know. I was turned off by 3 by the empty construction yard.....then I saw the video of the room in the carnival or wherever it was with the giant mirror, that shit scared me SO bad. I couldn't stop STARING at my monitor when I saw it off the website. I was so horrified, curious, & shocked all at once, I hadn't been like that for a WHILE either.

Best i played recently was Eternal Darkness: Sanity requiem, bit dull towards the end, but a couple of very good scares!
Alone in the Dark should definately get an honourable mention along with Res evil.
Played a bit of doom 3, scary game, but my computer is a bit of a cripple.. didnt run well.
Silent hill is one i've always ment to play but never got around to, is it console only or is there a PC conversion?

some dude told me doom 3 had bad lightning and that it's "too dark"
Ok here's the thing...
1.)it's underground
2.)no windows
3.)lights get shattered in 60% of the places
4.)it makes it scarier
then they said silent hill had great lightning...when i could barely see anything that was going on because the stupid apartment complex thing was too dark. it was like pitch black.
Doom 3 also had its ways of making ANYTHING you see that could move, actually fall. I pushed a cup off the table i mean damn!, anything could move. Silent hill you couldnt move anything off the table, and the lil radio static always made it where you knew somethin was comming. That's what made the scare factor go down, you KNEW what was comming to you. Doom 3 you had no clue when something was comming at you.
I have never played Doom 3 all that much, A friend of mine has it so I have only ever played it at her house. The Game scared me senseless the first time I played it though.
i like doom 3 shadows...you're walking and u see something walking up from its shadow...one time i freaked the **** out cuz this guys body fell out of the ceiling and the shadow was big on the wall im like AHH and i started shootin my gun lol
The thing is, when you know it's coming, you think, "Holy crap! Where's it coming from?!"
I'd have to say that right now, F.E.A.R. seems pretty creepy. I only heard about what happens in the demo and I was scared for a week. But also, Fatal Frame should be up there. That was pretty creepy.
(my evaluation of scary isn't the scare-scary, it's the creepy-scary that keeps you up at night afraid that something's going to happen to you)
doom 3 sucked. there was no recoil factor. that practically eliminates any illusion of realism, making the game laughable, destroying the scare factor. a lot of the bosses from RE are pretty scary. like the giant crocodile, the leech thing from Outbreak, and especially the mutated girl from the Gamecube RE (she freaked me out with the shackles, and the sack on her head, and that MOANING!)
