He didn't know he would die either. That was largely an act of selfishness to be the "big hero", which he bragged about after to anyone who would listen, a semi-running gag.
Tony's true sacrifice came in the final of End Game. Seriously, how did you not follow Tony's character arc development from ego maniac to selfless hero?
