I'd say Sum 41 are underated. Everyone knows them because of the shit like Fat Lip and In Too Deep. Those songs unfortunetly shadow some greats songs like Were All Too Blame and Angels With Dirty Faces. Agree with the rest tho.
I'd also say Arctic Monkeys and Morrisey!

Through Solace- The Stand out in March 08 on Holdfast Records
As I was back-reading this forum looking for the top albums of the '90s thread, I stumbled upon this one and decided to give it a quick look over.
If this is a top ten list for most overrated bands of all time, I absolutely and completely take issue with John Mayer being on there, as well as U2 and maaayyybbbeeeee DMB (even as a hardcore fan of those guys, I'd readily admit they haven't released anything of quality since they scrapped their Lillywhite Sessions back in '00).
John Mayer gets press coverage because of the women he ****s...nothing is ever mentioned about his music...which is, in fact, ****ing brilliant...he wears his influences on his sleeve quite literally and anyone who brings the names of Hendrix and SRV to a new and young audience has to be doing something right. He's, quite frankly, one of the best and most soleful blues guitarists going...are there more techincally gifted players out there?...yes....are there better pure blues players out there?....yes...but he brings a diversity and style that is sadly lacking in modern music.
anyone who disagrees should watch this performance...his idea of "less is more" and having respect for players who deliberately hold back rather than constantly ripping out blistering solos is to be applauded.
I don't think Nirvana is overrated, but almost everyone around them at the time was like soundgarden and pearl jam. Hell it was good music and in a role reversal, it finally helped get sonic youth the level of exposure they deserved.

Ok i think what they wrote was shit, what they did though for music was interesting.
They made grunge acceptable.
I don't know how but that's what happened.
Overrated, definitely, most overrated? no way
Try the Beatles, Elvis or The bee jees.
Still, i hate them accept for David roll, that man is a champ.

I wouldn't call Nirvana a grunge band by any stretch of the imagination. If you've ever heard the Wipers, you'd know that they fit neatly into the category of Northwest punk.

Then why does every other "grunge" band sound so different from Nirvana and so much more "metal". if we're going to play the music categorization game, whereas nirvana sounds most like a weird combination of the wipers, the melvins, black flag and flipper?

Because grunge wasn't just a sound...It was a social and thematic thread that ran through a lot of bands regardless of sound. Although i don't think it can be denied that, vocally, bands like AiC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana are all pretty similar.
Granted, early AiC were very much more metal than grunge but their sound changed radically the more Layne was addicted to heroin.
After reading through this thread... all I really have to say is that saying a band is overrated all comes down to point of view, I think. One person will think The Beatles are overrated and that their songs should not be as worshipped as they are, and someone else will think that each song they wrote deserved every piece of praise it got.
Though I also agree with AC's statement about being in the right place at the right time for Nirvana and The Beatles both, leading movements and whatnot. Some of the most popular bands in musical history have been spearheads in some way.
I'd say more figureheads than spearheads...Very rarely is a big band the 1st to do something. They merely make something that was already around hugely popular.
nirvana was a good band, the broke the barrier of metal rock of the 80's and brought the 90's grunge rock. but in my opinion i think aic was the best band along with stp and soundgarden and pearl jam.
