I still feel like (just like punk) there's gotta be an earlier band. I mean who fits? The Stooges? The Sonics? The MC5? The Kingsmen? The Kinks? Iron Butterfly? The Beatles? The Stones?

If we're going by riffing, wouldn't that make Cliff Richard And The Shadows the first metal band back in 1958?

Everybody knows it was Sabbath, people who deny this are just biased Zeppelin fan-boys.

Ok I read some good things here but I can tell you from my being there as I'm 46 years old as to how the two ( Rock vs Metal) became as they are in the general sense.Lets say Rock Music in the 60's was an onion. You know layers etc.Rock was one big genre with Jerry Lee Lewis,Elvis,The Who,Beatles,Rolling Stones and many more.Hendrix began to seperate those layers in a sense. However Sabbath "split" the onion to begin the path of metal as we know it in which it is a seperate genre to itself.

Hard Rock is headbanging party slammin music that grabs your soul and says lets have a good time. Metal pierces your soul and takes you down a path of euphoria in a sense. Now these terms are only to get you thinking, that's all.Right after sabbath you had Iron Maiden,Motorhead,Priest,Scorpions and many others who helped to shape and form metal as it is today but Zepplin was never metal in it's truest form as a whole ever. They have a few songs which blur Rock and Metal but so do many other bands like Rush's 2112 album,Thin Lizzy's first album,Ted Nugents early stuff and Kiss early stuff Deep Purple (as a side note :Richie Blackmores Rainbow was more metal than Deep Purple) but they are all Hard Rock like AC/DC and many others.Metal is Sabbath,Metallica early days,Iron Maiden,Slayer,Pantera,Judas Priest Helloween,Sepultura Dio etc etc etc .I know their are typos but who cares.AND FOR THE RECORD,NONE OF THE GLAM ROCK BANDS OF THE 80'S AND 90'S ARE OR EVER WERE METAL.AKA Van Halen,Crue Guns and Roses and those types.tHEY ARE HOWEVER A GREAT hARD rOCK GENRE THAT ARE ALL ABOUT HEADBANGING AND EMOTIONAL THINKING WHERE AS METAL IS (TO STEAL SOMEONES ANALOGY HERE ) METAL IS LORD OF THE RINGS ,THE SOUND IS METAPHORS OF SWORDS IN BATTLE. I'm sure this whole thing I wrote can get nitpicked to death but the spirit in which I wrote it is correct.Their are a few new bands that are mainstream popular that are metal influenced but a sun genre of metal like disturbed, korn to name a couple but metal has become it's own onion of layers now but a true music fan of both Hard Rock and Heavy Metal as they are called know the difference. For example,if I was making a mixed cd.I'd put system of a down, disturbed and korn on a cd but I'd put godsmack on a different cd.I really like them all but they dont go together...JUST MY OPINION but I've been into " Rock and Metal since I was a kid and I'm 47 next month and was influenced by many talented artists .

p.s.

in reference to Iomi vs Page. I would have to say both are equally talented however due to the styles of music it is an unfair comparison. The style of Metal allows Iomi to showcase more of his talent then the style of music Page plays.Roy Clark is better than both of them talentwise but due to the style of music,he was overlooked in 95% of any top 50 greatest guitarist lists anywhere. However if you read magazines about guitar players, many of the "top" guitarists will always include Roy Clark in the discussion themselves yet in his genre people think of chet Atkins and not Roy.Roy Clark invented chords in the 50's and could play any instrument with strings as a master of all.A majority of people have never even heard of Frank Marino or perhaps Robin Trower but both are equally as good at the guitar.Frank Marino was billed as the next Jimi Hendrix in his early dayshe was so good.

Neither.

The first metal band is arguably Blue Cheer.

Nope you'll find the Beatles are just another band. In the same way as Sabbath, Zeppelin and the Stones are. True they all offered something to music but they are all just bands; to place any band on such pedestals is just laughable and prone to criticism.

Well if we extrapolate this to ridiculous levels we could say that Eddie Cochran and Richie Valence invented both metal and punk in 1957 but I'll agree that yeah, Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum was the first metal record back in 1968.

And for the sake of building more argument, 1964's Here Are The Sonics is the first punk record, The Bad Brains' Pay To Cum, The Middle Class' Out Of Vogue, and Black Flag's Nervous Breakdown were all the first Hardcore records, all coming out around the same time in 1979, and The Wiper's Better Off Dead was the first grunge record back in 1978.

Led Zeppelin were never a heavy metal band. they started off as an extremely loud blues rock just as cream(who's own heaviness is actually extremely underacknowled these days)had done before them, but as they developed their own sound they actually included more acoustic elements into their music and experimented with american roots music(folk, blues, bluegrass, boogie woogie, rockabilly) contemporary popular music like funk(ie the crunge) and world music(ie kashmir). The closest thing they ever did to metal was achilles last stand, but it wasn't metal.

Black Sabbath on the other hand was "demonic" and menacing from the very start. they wrote the first metal songs and put them on the first album(Black Sabbath(featuring the infamous tritone, and metal's central figure, satan), The Wizard, and N.I.B); followed it by the archetypal heavy metal album of all time(Paranoid), and then after Tony Iommi detuned his guitar(another of metal's most important cornerstones that can be traced directly to the originator) put out 4 of the heaviest albums of all time writing the blueprint for stoner rock and the extreme subgenre doom metal. oh yeah, they invented thrash too (symptom of the universe) 2 full years before the punk rock movement. every metal riff ever written is directly traceable to black sabbath-they're the same chord progressions, Tony Iommi literally wrote the goddamn code! anyone who disagrees is just kidding themselves. blue cheer and deep purple et al all had metallic elements in their rock but they went their own different paths, influencing the genre with their stylings, but the bare bones of metal had long long been established by the sabs.

It was The Kinks in 1964.. but it all started much earlyer than that in the 1950's when The Kinks guitar player Dave Davies, at the age of 8 invented Guitar Distortion, by using his mother's knitting neidles to pock holes in his amplifier speaker.

If it had not been for him there would be no Black Sabbath, Metallica or anyone who uses distortion after The Kinks.

Some people may not have even been born at all.

I don't really think any of the 3 were the first metal band, just the main influences behind the genre. I mean if they're metal bands, you could say the Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who were, a times at least, metal bands, really, since a lot of their work had similar qualities (with Led Zep and Deep Purple the most). Not to mention The Kink's "You Really Got Me" from 1964, that was also an influence on the sound of metal music.
