If Depa's dueling skill surpassed Mace's, she would have been considered alongside Yoda and Dooku as to have the ability to beat him.
By the way, Nick Gillard says that as of AOTC, Mace was second to only Yoda in terms of skill.

If she's less powerful in the force, she may be technically more skilled but able to force-amp less.
