Uncharted Territories
Everything was quiet save for the dull roar of the truck… A convoy of six personnel transports and four military Hummers rolled through the quiet countryside-road, thick forests lay on either side as they headed towards the mountain at a steady pace. On the first truck, an Australian Colonel by the name of Tomas Seglins gazed idly at his surroundings as they rolled by, he was used to the gum-trees of his home-land but the new scenery was a nice change.
On his lap lay the standard-issue Australian Army main rifle, he tapped the custom scope playfully and took a good look at his fellow officers lined in the truck; Dale from the new 101st airborne, just like Tomas he was a Colonel, he didn’t know the man very well but he got along with him… Next in line was an Englishman RAF Lt. Colonel named Tylor, he hadn’t spoken a word since they first got on the truck and he didn’t quite trust the look of him… There was also a skirt on board, a Yank named Major Lindsay McMillan, she looked like a Civie even in full garb but had the air of a seasoned fighter, what with all the firm build and all… There were two others he hadn’t been introduced to yet, a Luitenant dressed in the strangest uniform and a First Sergeant from another division he didn’t recognize…
The Truck jumped slightly as the driver geared her down, Tomas stood up and looked over the cabin to see the entrance to an old nuclear silo surrounded by active personnel and a nine-foot high tiger-wired fence. They paused at the gate for a moment and the guards suspiciously eyed the Colonel as if he were untrustworthy, probably the Aussie uniform, he thought. He had to hold himself down tight as the truck roared up again and took them deep into the mountain, the dull-orange lights of the entry tunnel actually hurt the eyes after a few hours of natural sunlight, forcing Tomas back into his seat.
“Well this is cheerful…” he muttered to himself, no one responded…
The convoy finally came to a rest at a ramped section leading up to the inner-entrance, just a little further down he could see the giant blast-door that lead into the complex. A team of men in full-yank-formals walked up as everyone got out to stretch their legs, the man in the middle, a Brigadier General walked up and shook his hand, Tomas saluted him respectfully, the others followed suit, “Welcome to the SGC Colonel, I’m Brigadier General Jason Edwards, commander of this site” he seemed almost excited to greet the team of newcomers personally, Tomas didn’t trust a trait like that but he played along.
“Forgive me sir, SG-what?” he asked honestly.
“Oh, the SGC Stands for Stargate Command, here we operate the device and coordinate all off-world operations!” once again he seemed quite proud of himself to be introducing them to the facility, his chest puffed up full of pride.
“This way, please” Edwards invited them, gesturing towards the main entrance as a group of layman-soldiers took their bags into the facility. He had to admit, the Colonel felt a bit wide-eyed as they were shown around the facility, he had never been in a nuclear-silo before. The guided tour took about two hours for everyone to get a good glimpse of just the most important areas of the facility, though not the gate-room or central command, that was saved for last.
“I won’t lie to you all, this is gonna’ blow your mind!” The General said excitedly as they lined up in the control-room, “Open the blast-shield…” the operator at the main controls punched in the command and the solid-steel shield rolled back to reveal the gate itself, a few of the new arrivals gasped and marveled, Tomas was slightly unimpressed and a little disappointed that it looked so simple, leading him to believe for just a brief moment that the whole thing might be a big joke…
The next moment, the complex shook slightly and a sharp clunking noise followed by a groaning whir rolled out from the Gate-Room, “Incoming wormhole… Chevron one encoded…” the operator called as if he had said that phrase a thousand or so times.
“What the hell is happening?” the Colonel asked in general to anyone who knew.
“Just regular procedure, the Russian SG team is due back… wait until the Seventh Chevron is locked, that’s where it gets interesting!” The excitable Brigadier General announced, he really seemed like he loved his job.
“Chevron five encoded!”
“What’s happening, why is it making that god-awful racket, sir?” the Colonel spoke up, worried that it sounded like the hull of a ship being torn off bolt-by-bolt.
“The Gate is dialing up our coordinates so that a wormhole can be established between Earth and the other side…” Edwards replied, “Wait for it…”
“Chevron seven, locked…” the next moment, the gate emmited a gut-wrenching sound like an immense servo-motor before the center of the ring exploded with a brilliant burst of light as a giant blue fireball rocketed outwards towards the control-center, every-single one of the newcomers jumped back before the energy rolled back into the ring to form a standing pool of glowing water. A four-man team of Russian soldiers strolled idly out from the gate before the whole thing shut down and the pool of water disappeared, returning the gate back to it’s mundane form…
“As I said, Welcome to the SGC!” The General said once more, directing the group to the spiral staircase leading up to the briefing room and sitting them all down.
“Any questions?” his face was positively livid with excitement, Tomas already didn’t like this man…
