Over the Cliff?

http://news.yahoo.com/analysis-obam...6--finance.html

Opinions on Obamas plan to take America over the cliff if republicans refuse to agree with his taxing methods? Is it a bluff or would he really do this?

If the Republican are willing to destroy their political position while damaging the nation's finances more power to them. They'll bluster a bit and then not be idiots.

Idk I can't really blame the republicans for this in truth. The President is the one giving them the ultimatum. I really don't want a leader that is childish enough to say do things my way or im going to let everyone suffer. He might want to swing it so it sounds like the republicans fault but imo you blame the guy who gives the ultimatum not the ones who refuse to follow it.

Except that the Republicans have really issued the ultimatum. Obama is just saying that he'll let them drive off a cliff if they refuse to compromise.

Problem for Obama, it would ultimately backfire for the Democrats, the Republicans wouldn't mind if the country took a deeper dive into the shit-pool under a Democrat's watch, they'd use it as a 2016 platform.

I highly doubt they won't reach a compromise. There is be some debate, mud throwing, and in the end they will (like last time) do what is required. It's just tiresome to watch the exact same circus over and over.

Good. I hope Obama does this with every policy he pushes for. I've been waiting for that soft ass nigro to grow a pair for four years, and I voted for him only out of hope that if he won re-election he'd be more willing to fight for his ideals.

**** the Republicans, **** bi-partisanship. He's the President, he's the house. If desperate measures and showboating is what he needs to get what he wants than so be it.

It was my understanding from the article that he was going to just let us go over the cliff without any attempt to stop it if they didn't sign off on what he wanted done. Not that he was saying that he would let them run us over the cliff with their ideals.

I don't think Obama is being childish.

It's all poo. There's not much hope when 99% of Republicans sign pledges that they will never under any circumstances raise taxes. Some analysts are saying that they will let this happens simply so that next year they can lower the taxes back to a reasonable rate after the fact and avoid having to set that rate now. It's all an idiotic game, and just sad that they're so openly able to try and turn this back into a country of few haves and many many have-nots.

I'm happy for Obama finally standing up for something, I don't know if he'd go through with it, but lets be fair, the blame here is completely on the Republicans. Calling Obama childish for this in light of the last 4 years seems ignorant.

Anyways, as far as I can tell the US "budget crisis" is a completely artificial construct, based solely on the unwillingness of politicians to do what is needed. (probably for selfish (i.e. they are corrupt (big donors etc.)) reasons)

The fiscal cliff is an invented deal created by the Republicans in order to force a standoff. What's gonna happen? We go over the cliff, a middle class tax cut package is proposed with a restoration of all lost funding attached which they then have to pass or seem like hypocrites on taxes. If they don't, the president is authorized to mint and sell platinum coins worth any denomination he feels like in order to raise funding, plus the behavior of many congressmen and their backers, if investigated could easily earn them century long stints in solitary at Super Max or a visit to old sparky so there's that leverage too.
