I appreciate what BioWare was going for in the form of Kai Leng, but he came off a little too... meh for me. Thessia was an absolute highlight of the game for me as far as levels go, primarily for the story aspect.
He came off as pretty lame. He was incredibly easy to beat and only 'won' because he gets bullshit immortality. But I still cheered when I killed him so I guess he worked as an loathsome douche at least. And I loved Thessia as well. From what I can tell people just hate being forced to lose to Kai leng's bullshit. I agree with that because that boss fight was awful, but other than that Thessia was amazing. I really liked talking to Liara after that as well as Shepards reaction as well. Very well handled.
I like the idea that there's a recurring physical adversary for Shepard, someone who proves his worth by killing [SPOILER - highlight to read]: Thane, defeating [SPOILER - highlight to read]: Miranda, and swatting [SPOILER - highlight to read]: Liaria aside like a fly, but they didn't do enough with Leng that could have made him a memorable baddie.
As far as Thessia goes, [SPOILER - highlight to read]: Shepard canonically losing a mission as opposed to just losing a teammate really sells the idea that no matter how badass you are, you're still the underdog.
Maybe.
Thane's fighting skills certainly didn't seem to suffer, though I do remember he said he wouldn't be of use to Shepard for the duration of the mission.
That said, I openly prefer enemies who help take a bit of the piss (to borrow a weird English expression) out of Shepard and the good guys. Makes their story and their struggle more compelling for me.
The popular idea that Shepard could solo the galaxy makes part of me sad.
Exactly. I love the idea, if only he wasn't just a posturing arrogant kung-fu guy it would have worked better. An awesome idea I heard was to replace him with a clone of Shepard, maybe even a gender-flipped version. That would have been ****ing cool as hell, and would even have added to Shepards [SPOILER - highlight to read]: thing at the end where she starts to question if she's the real Shepard. I can imagine having a badass 1 on 1 duel with your clone with their class matching yours, a biotic-charge slugfest as a Vangaurd, singularity spam as an Adept, etc. Damn, I wished they'd have done that.
Another idea was that Cerberus would re-use the Lazarus project to bring back whoever you killed on Virmire and indoctrinate them. That also has potential for pathos and cool moments, but I think I prefer the clone idea.
I haven't played the game yet, and it's been out for barely a month. Ergo, you guys need to collectively shut the **** up and go to the ME3 thread in the video game section, if you want to discuss the game.
Thanks.

You can probably send him a pm and get away with it. Scythe's a pretty cool guy.

Comments like this and a few others here and at RoK still make me question how much of your analysis of the game is firsthand and how much is hearsay or influenced by immersing yourself in reviews both before and after playing the game.
Those people royally suck. Keeping both parties alive was amazingly easy, unless you were a mindless renegade.
Is it possible that anyone can articulate an opinion that differs from yours without responses suggesting they're irretrievably biased, completely dishonest, or part of a grand conspiracy to tarnish the otherwise pristine reputation of the finest video game ever made?
