I mean there were some crazy lightsaber designs prior Canon too.
I dunno though if horror really fits within SW however. I mean....I guess it can, I mean we had Abeloth who looks like some Lovecraft horror and then there's the Death Troopers, along with some beasts who come off as horrorish.
But this strange delving into releasing more of this horror themed stuff seems kinda..off.
Star Wars has never settled for one type of genre. Star Wars is basically the universe filled with supernatural entities and beings. Star Wars can be any genre a writer wants it to be.

Star Wars does have its share of HORROR elements and affiliated stories.
Darth Drear - a powerful Lord of the Sith, and one of the older members of the ancient Sith Empire reconstituted by Tenebrae (The Sith Emperor) - established a Sith Academy on a planet Odacer-Faustin; the planet's harsh environmental conditions and lack of population base offered an ideal setting for Dark sciences and raising a new generation of Sith to support the Empire.
More then that, Darth Drear sought to exterminate the Jedi Order and explored ways to achieve CORPOREAL IMMORTALITY.
The Academy was massive in size with a LIBRARY of its own and a TEMPLE underground. Darth Drear was proficient in the matters of Sith Alchemy and created an ELIXIR which could FACILITATE in the procedure of achieving CORPOREAL IMMORTALITY.
The alluded procedure mandated the USER of the ELIXIR to consume the still-beating heart of a strong Force-sensitive in order to achieve the necessary bloodstream which would enable CORPOREAL IMMORTALITY. In order to surgically remove and acquire the still-beating heart from the body of a Force-sensitive subject, he created a special blade for this purpose alone.
Darth Drear ordered his apprentices to capture a Jedi for the aforementioned. They brought one to him and he attempted the procedure but the subject was lacking in the Midichlorian Count, leading to failure of the procedure and Darth Drear perished consequently.
Knowledge of the aforementioned was preserved in Darth Drear's Sith Holocron however.
But nobody attempted the aforementioned until Darth Scabrous centuries later during the era of Satele Shan. Darth Scabrous took his chances with Darth Drear's procedure but his effort was FOILED by a Jedi named Hestizo Trace.
"Darth Drear wrote that he had found an elixir for staving off death itself, the ingredients of which he recorded in the Holocron—including, of course, your beloved orchid. The mixture was complete in and of itself, with a single flaw—the inevitable dissolution of the tissue." - Darth Scabrous
Darth Scabrous's experiments caused leakage of the ELIXIR, and it became apparent that it could reanimate corpses and create ZOMBIES (The Walking Dead type) and worse. The Academy was overrun by the ZOMBIES and completely abandoned therefore. This came to be known as the Odacer-Faustin outbreak.
---
Centuries later, Darth Vader learned about the aforementioned and commissioned a team of scientists - members of the Imperial Biological Weapons Division - to investigate the matter and experiment aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer Vector; Imperial bioweapons Project I71A. This led to the Death Troopers CHAPTER aboard Vector however.

There are additional stories as well. TARIS - once a booming Metropolis much like CORUSCANT - had the RAKGHOUL disease problem in its darkest depths - The Undercity sector where FEW dared to operate due to the obvious.
At some point during the course of GREAT GALACTIC WAR between the Republic and the reconstituted ancient Sith Empire, RAKGHOUL disease became a significant problem due to the Empire looking forward to weaponize it:
Theories abound on the origins of this highly contagious and adaptable virus: it may be the creation of an ancient Sith Lord; a naturally occurring result of the industrial toxins released into Taris’s oceans; or the spectacularly failed efforts of medical researchers to artificially engineer a broad-spectrum vaccine. Whatever the origins, the effects are undeniably terrifying. Typically spread through direct contact with rakghouls, fortunate victims suffer acute onset of flu-like symptoms that can prove fatal if not properly treated. However, in roughly half the cases the disease causes the host to undergo a horrific mutation, actually transforming them into a rakghoul. Virtually all humanoid species in the galaxy are susceptible to infection, and there are rumors that the Empire has undertaken efforts to weaponize the disease. Unsubstantiated reports of rakghouls on worlds other than Taris lend credence to this rumor… or indicate the disease is slowly spreading across the galaxy of its own accord.

SWTOR have a (spooky) FLASHPOINT dedicated to the aforementioned: KAON UNDER SIEGE.
Another instance of outbreak:

Supernatural HORROR is a common theme in relation to Temples constructed by (and for) the Sith; these are usually HAUNTED.
The Dark Temple of Dromund Kaas is officially one of the most dangerous and HAUNTED regions of the SAGA.
Hundreds of years ago, the Sith Emperor ordered the construction of the Dark Temple as a burial place for his dead and defeated enemies, “to aid them in becoming one with the Force.” Little is known of what rituals the Emperor performed there, but the Dark Temple has become a nexus of powerful dark side energy, and a place where ancient weapons and ancient secrets of the Sith lay sealed away in cavernous chambers. Although the Dark Temple grounds have always been a dangerous place for the weak-willed (the expansion of the Kaas City power grid into tunnels beneath the temple drove a thousand slaves mad), the temple itself remained sealed until recently, when an expedition of power-hungry Sith Lords and their servants breached the gateway. The Dark Council did not sanction this intrusion, nor did it punish the rogue Sith; no one returned from the expedition to punish. Violent electrical storms surrounded the temple for the first week after it was opened, and since then, additional expeditions have been sent by the council to determine the temple’s status. Their reports have not been made public.

Saber Scimitar is retarded but not as retarded as the saber staff and Lumiya's saber whip.
