 Gender: Male Location: On cloud 9 in 7th heaven! I didn't |
Main Entry: ig·no·rant
Pronunciation: 'ig-n(&-)r&nt
Function: adjective
1 a : destitute of knowledge or education <an ignorant society>; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified <parents ignorant of modern mathematics> b : resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence <ignorant errors>
2 : UNAWARE, UNINFORMED
- ig·no·rant·ly adverb
- ig·no·rant·ness noun
so now that you pissed off the wrong people, you want to get back on topic? and since "knowledgeful" isnt a word as you pointed out, whats "gonna"? I wasnt trying to flame you at first, i was being nice, yet getting my point across. Since I dont think you quite understand what kind of shitstorm you may be bringing down on yourself, i will sit back and not flame you this time. Thats not a threat, I'm just informing you.
And no I didnt think you were talking to me. You would have no basis for duing such a thing.

no problem
so....here's what im thinking:
we see sidious in the trailer swinging the saber, and i think its safe to assume that is during his duel with yoda...and in one of the webdocs, we see sidious stunt double with a sabre, in full sidious attire, exactly like the action figure...sans deformation. so...sidious will change his form during his duel with mace, right?
so here's whats bugging me:
anakin will witness sidious turn into a hideous freak BEFORE he decides to join him and kill mace...so....WHY? would that not serve as a deterrant? unless...UNLESS...sidious IS ancient, and lets anakin know this. anakin would then know that the dark side is capable of 'stopping people from dying'... all i know is it's THAT scene where sidious will sell the darkside to anakin. its in that scene where anakin will decide that the lightside is weak and the darkside is strong. he may not fully turn evil, but at that point he will be set on coarse.
so...what sells him? is the 'ancient palpatine' theory correct? you KNOW what i think

I'm inclined to agree with you on this PVS...
That does sound and feel so plausible.
It would indeed capitalize beautifully on the build that has been placed in the themes of Ep1 and Ep2....!
Yep I reckon you may well be right.

I think Sidious transforms right before his duel with Yoda. Supposedly, Anakin joins Palps after he kills Mace, and I've seen what appears to be footage of Anakin and Palpy after Mace's death together, but he has not yet transformed. It's still his regular face.

well, the problem is palps' wardrobe change. he seems to fight yoda dressed as sidious.
are you certain that this footage takes place after mace's death sith?

That's just it, I'm not "certain" but it appears as though they already are working together. Palps is sitting down in a chair. Anakin enters in the background, and then Palpy's chair slowly rotates to face Anakin and he's got a wicked evil look on his face. It almost looks like the scene where he orders him to slaughter the younglings or kill the separatist on Mustafar. Again, I'm not certain, it's just the way it looks.

That Palpatine figure (pics of which are posted above) is generally regarded as being from the Mace/Palpatine duel 2-pack. The costume the figure is wearing supports this idea.
Also, PVS -- I like the "Palpatine is ancient" idea as far as it being a cool idea, but didn't Pablo say that he's old but not THAT old, and that his transformation is the result of something specific that happens to him?
bilbofett posted this in the "Darth Sidious -- the man, the lost twenty & his apprentices" thread (where we already discussed this stuff):
"Well, just shot a hole in my own theory. Found this answer from Pabs....(paraphrased):
No,even though we don't know about them, there have been Sith lords between a thousand years ago and Sidious, he's not that old.
Oh well.............."

I'd like to see the exact quote that Gangularis mentioned being in the SW Insider (in Oct.) in the question section about how Sidious has been waiting 1000 years for revenge.

Hi Count... I've got to ask, as I do regard you as be reliable source, didn't the statement by Pablo circulated(And I only caught up with a couple of days ago :O say that if Palps wasn't 1000 yrs old that he was at least a couple of hundred years old..?
Please correct me if i'm misinformed about that as if there is one thing I hate, then my own misinformation indeed would be it...!
But if that is accurate, then still, by human standards at least he would still be old enough to impress Anakin with the whole Cheat-death-with-the-darkside-bit maybe....?
Damnit...! Posted late........

Well it's not very specific, it seems.
I guess we'll have to track down exact quotes for some of these statements.

Here is the Insider quote (as copied from TFN message board):
"The Sith are the natural enemy of the Jedi. As George Lucas describes it, the Sith were once in control of the galaxy 1000 years in the past. Unfortunately, the Sith's hunger for conquest got the better of them--so many Sith Lords were vying for ultimate control that it led to infighting among their ranks. Such internecine struggles were exploited by the Jedi Knights of the era, and they were able to turn the tide and defeat the Sith.
As Ki-Adi-Mundi states in Episode I, the Sith have been extinct for a millennium; however, not all were wiped out. A surviving Sith Lord sought to rebuild the order, to retake the galaxy, and to take revenge. The Sith Lord realized the dangers of having too many in the order, so he kept his existence a secret. It would be a long time coming, but he carefully plotted revenge. There would be only two Sith Lords at a time, a master and an apprentice, working in secret, planting the seeds of their eventual rise"
Comment by Count Doodoo on the above quote: That book "Secrets of the Sith" (which is EU so I guess doesn't count) says that Darth Bane is the Sith Lord that started the "rule of two", etc.
"Palpatine's withered appearance has to do with something very specific that happens to him"-- Pablo Hidalgo, Star Wars Insider #73.
Another Pablo Hidalgo quote:
" Episode 3 will have some insight into recent sith history, but not ancient sith history. In fact, you will learn more about Palpatine in this movie than all the other movies combined. But don't expect to learn that much. But you'll know more about his plan and at least you'll have some ideas about his origin....."
As far as the quote about Palpatine's age, I couldn't find an exact quote, but it seems to have said only that he's not 1000 years old and that there were other Sith Lords between 1000 years before ROTS and ROTS. Maybe someone who has Hyperspace can find the exact quote.
For what it's worth (I have my doubts as to the extent of his knowledge), Josh G. said this stuff:
Q: A hint/tidbit about Palpy's revelation about being Sidious/a Sith Lord? Like, is his "transformation" literal? A literal physical transition the audience sees on screen? Maybe during the Mace duel?
A:"You have no idea about that you are about to see. The simple answer is YES. Heck, yes ... "
" ...when you SEE this, you'll understand my energy in loving this scene. Almost shockingly cool ..."
Q: Can you tell me anything at all about what causes Sidious's look to change?
A:"He gets p**sed at Mace and the confrontation squad."

Here's the Q& A from Pabs guys, from 10/21/04:
Q) Has Darth Sidious somehow survived from the time of the galactic reign of the Sith, a thousand years ago?
(I will take the absence of an answer as a "yes". )
A) No, he's not that old. There have been Sith lords between a thousand years ago and Sidious, even though we don't know about them
Hope that helps

I really hope Lucas know what he's doing with this part of the movie. I fear he's going to put out some lame, stupid explanation for Palpatine's change.
I hope I'm wrong though.....

Nice one guys.
Still been wracking my brains trying to source that quote I mentioned but still am drawing a temporary blank. Just can't escape the feeling that it was either Pablo or Josh... however, it certainly hasn't surfaced in the above transcripts as submitted by your good selves...
My search will go on....! (And Im just praying that it wasn't on TFN.... I've been scouring the boards an awful lot recently, please forgive my fatigued-non-referencing.. I certainly wouldn't have quoted some BS knowingly to you guys. ) Peace

I noticed this today while looking through old spoilers:
(From Timberwolf at TFN Oct. 7, 2003)
"In a makeup test, they had Ian McDiarmid looking just like the Emperor we know from the Classics, complete with yellow eyes and terrible crevaces of deep facial features. In one shot he's kind of gritting his teeth looking right at the camera. There are dark rings of red and brown under and around his eyes, and his lips are pursed and cracked. His face doesn't just look weathered, it looks plain evil. His black cloak is over his head in this first test shot.
In a second shot, his cloak is removed and you can see the top of his head. It is more of a casual shot with Ian almost smiling an evil grin to the camera. You can SO see him under the latex, it's some great work there. From this side shot you can see the intricate aging work in his neck and forehead, the man looks evil - a face only a mother could love. And even then, it might be difficult.
Why does Sidious look like this? He always did. Palpatine is his disguise/alternate persona he adopted to get himself into political power. He isn't able to maintain the disguise while using his powers and you'll see him flash to his Sidious look earlier in the film until he does the official 'unveiling.'
So would it be cool to see a first glimpse of this face as Palpatine feels the Dark Side flow through his body at a critical point in the film? Maybe there's been a confrontation, and Palpatine realizes this is the time to open up a can of something on a visiting Jedi."
I've also noticed that various Star Wars timelines on different sites give different birth dates for Palpatine (most around 80 years before Ep IV). None of them seem to cite even EU references for these though. Maybe they're just made up.
You'd think that if Palpatine were representing an entire planet that he'd have many political opponents who would've checked into his past looking for scandals; if he were really hundreds of years old, the fact would be hard to hide because of this.
