Ever since the Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition opened in May 1997, a certain 9 year old kid (me) nagged my mother to go and see it. By then, i had already seen such movies as Jurassic Park, which boasted ground breaking special effects. But it didnt have much effect on me. I wanted something bigger! something......out of this world!
I first watched Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and to think a movie that shocked audiences 20 years ago could still have an effect on people of my era is amazing. To me, i felt i was always there at the opening day. May 25th 1977 was the day people had seen a movie that would change Cinema forever. Only difference was, i saw the movie exactly 20 years later so from that day forward, my life was changed.
Not long after, i had the pleasure to watch Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. At this time i was 10 years old, and i never knew that Darth Vader was lukes father, eventhough the secret was out for 17 years already so i was shocked, just as everyone else was, so emediately, this movie became my greatest movie of all time ( btw, still not topped )
Then Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi came along, and like Revenge Of The Sith, it felt like the circle was complete. The Ewoks didnt piss me off surprisingly, but i always saw this episode as the very first "Modern Blockbuster" , but it didnt quite live up to ANH and Empire in my opinion
Then in 1999, when i was 12 years old, the prequels began. At first i hated the idea, but when Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace soon came around, the excitement kicked in yet again, and IT WAS BACK!
In 2002, Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones was released, and the night of May 16th was one of my most memorable moments to date So will Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith surpass anything the OT had to offer?? its honestly too early to tell, but i think one thing will remain, A New Hope and Empire will never be topped!!!!!

I've read thru these posts and tried to be open when reading others opinions. Those of you who saw the OT when it orginally came out, have an affinity for those movies that can't be matched now that we are adults. We all remember as a kid the first time the opening scene played out in ANH. It took us five minutes to realize our jaws were still open after the opening scene died down. Before then, there had never been an opening statement such as that in cinema history. When those fast paced 2 hours ended....we were hooked. I remember pestering my parents every week to take me back to see it again, never able to get enough and fearing that it might be gone for good (before the days of video or dvd). ESB comes around 3 years later, and now we have a detailed story that is interwoven well around the effects and giving the characters a depth that wasn't explored in ANH. I still remember Vader's fateful words and the collective gasp from the audience that I've never heard or seen since. The only disappointment at that time about ESB is that we had to wait another 3 years to see how the drama played itself out. ROTJ was a nice epilogue in the series, but most agreed in 1983 that it didn't have the pizzazz or the orginality of the first two. Death Star II, ewoks somehow triumphing over the Emperor's best legion of men?, a ragtag fleet somehow able to best the entire fleet?
But, it was still Star Wars and we loved it.
I know a lot of you love the prequels, but unfortunately they can't rekindle the feelings that us older generation felt the first time around with the OT. To me it seems that characterization and fine storytelling have been pushed aside for mind blowing special effects that try to top everything else that we have become accustomed to in today's day and age.
But, like everyone else here, it's just an opinion.
1. ESB 2. ANH 3. ROTJ 4. AOTC 5. TPM
ROTS: unfortunately, its impossible to place w/o first seeing it....but I would be happy if it can rival ROTJ.
PEACE.

We always get this excuse from seeing the OT when we were kids. But I think one can quite strongly agree that ANH and ESB are superior in storytelling and directing. Plus there's another simple conclusion: the OT rocked the film world, the PT is so so among other great films. Modern technology allows Lucas to finally show his true vision, and yet it has much less of an impact than say... LOTR. Which in its true right is the OT of the 21st century.

from what ive heard and read, ROTS seems to get darker than ESB.
Ok , we know what will happen with the new born Darth Vader in E4-6, but still it got some points for the darkness.
1. ESB
2. ROTS
3. ANH
4. ROTJ
5. TPM
6. AOTC
with ANH/ROTS fighting for 2/3...

Very true.
All I'm saying: SW is not making much of an impact these days. Not on the storytelling field (unlike: "I am your father") as well as technologically. Despite some critics, the overall assessment wordlwide by both viewers and critics of LOTR is that Jackson did one hell of a job.
