But why is that not a serious use of it? Just because he is not being literal it doesn't mean he is not being serious.
I am pretty sure that if he saw someone being lucky his first thought would be 'Hmm, the Force seems to be with him today...' as opposed to 'He seems to be lucky today'.

It's not just an expression. That says there is no luck, so if there is the Force there is something deliberate going on. Something that can be sensed. Like the vergence around Anakin.
They wouldn't mean anything so active. When things go well for you it is the will of the Force. Like Qui-Gon finding Anakin- he believed that was the will of the Force, not luck. But it is not as if he sensed it happening.

Did he sense it? I don;t think so. He finds a mysteriously powerful Force adept who is only 8 and has no father. His instincts told him that this was the vergence he suspected it was.

What sort of nonsense is that? Instincts tell you things, hence the phrase "What does your instinct tell you?" or "My instinct told me England was going win that match' and so on.

Well, that;s how it was with Qui-Gon. When he found Anakin his instincts told him he was the Chosen One. Simple as that. I don;t understand the objection.

I never heard of that phrase. "What does your heart tell you", sounds familiar though. But that has to do with deeper emotions. Instincts are basic gut feelings. Animals have instincts yet I doubt their instincts tell them that another animal has special talents. But when they sense danger, their instinct tells them to run.
That's why QGJ instructed Anakin to trust his instincts during the pod race.
And when we take this one step further (or back) to ROTJ. Luke senses that Leia is his sister without being told. OB1 did not say "Your instincts serve you well", but he said "Your INSIGHT serves you well." And his insight was given through use of the Force, not through instinct.
