In ANH, during the cantina part, did OB1 kill that guy or slice his hand off? I don't recall, he may be another one...

That was an arm...and it bled...so we disqualify that.

Yoda also had his hand sliced off, but Lucas decided not to include that since Yoda's facade was too important to protect.

He did??? What a terrible idea.

If we inlcude the ANH cantina, we can also include the AOTC bar one... but the are arms.

IMHO... too many hands got cut off. It's Lucas' inflation of a good concept: he uses it too much.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Bottomless shafts in enclosed spaces.

Yeah... those too.... but they are minor, since the hands getting cut off were pretty crucial in the Luke-Vader relationship. Since everyone gets their hands cut of, it loses its meaning of destiny and choice of the path you're gonna walk.

If you forget, Vader forced Luke down a bottomless shaft....

...that would be a significant development in a relationship with anyone that I know.

Err.... yeah, in a way.

But the cut-off hand of Vader made Luke realise how close he was to the very turning point that his father once reached, it showed him where he stood and in a way what to choose. So that scene of Luke chosing for the good side is what the whole saga is about: choice for good and bad. So, with all these hands getting chopped off, it devaluates that moment. And that is a shame.

It provides cohesion. And yes, it is pointlessly repetative because Lucas cant think of how to dispose of characters.

Well, he thinks repetition is profound.... That's what worries me.

It works of course, but when applied properly. But he finds it poetic when everything is repeated everywhere. He overdid it.

Its not overdone...its far from typical though. It helps to connect a saga that spans 27 years. People already feel as if they know a part of the film.

You don't need to repeate everything three times to connect something, style, music etc. should connect it up as a whole. Not repeating scenes x times...

It is when all you do is repeat yourself. I like the hands repetition thing with Luke and Anakin, because it shows a similar path they are walking.

Some parrallels are nice when they show a different outcome when a situation is handled differently. But so often it is random, just for the sake of repetition.

As I said, it doesn't really bother me. I think its an artistic mechanism. Lucas really isn't known for his mature filmmaking.

Well I'm glad that this little thread of mine is enjoyable, and that it's caused some discussions over the paralells in the saga.

Good stuff.

Here's some new ones:

At the end of TPM, we focus in on the Sith Master, and his goal... Anakin.

In ROTS, all the obstacles blocking Palps from Anakin are removed.

The shots have the soldiers in similar positions in the frame.

Opposite positions and colors, yet the holograms are in almost the exact same spot.
