Luke was pretty much trained the same way as the Old Republic Jedi, and he was trained by Jedi of the Old Republic. When he started training more Jedi, he was teaching them what he learned from the old Jedi, which made them part of the original Order. Anyway, that might seem confusing, so why NJO?

The new Order was actually trained very differently than the old one. The first 12 were trained just by Luke, as were many after that. Also, Masters would sometimes(though by the NJO books they no longer did this) take mutiple apprentices. The New Order also didn't train from birth(except for Anakin, Jacen and Jaina).

It was a totally different Order. It had two Councils, instead of one. It allowed marriage and personal possession. Masters could have more than one apprentice. It was nothing like the original.
But the NJO Jedi have to many weaknesses. All a person has to do is kidnap his wife/husband/kid/parent and the Jedi will fall to the dark side like Anakin.
Besides, the freedom might be to prevent people from having romances behind the Order's back, then become nervous or such about it and be overprotective about their family members, as Anakin was (sort-of).
well yeh luke knew what he was doing, after all he was able to confront vader+palpy and resist their best seduction attempt and walked away in one peice. while vader and palpy are now dead. what does that tell you?
That Luke his love for his friends caused him to stay on the Light side. However that same love turned him to the Dark Side not much later.
The things that are allowed in the NJO books are crazy at the best of times. Its so easy to kill a jedi's partner, child, or the friends or whatever. Even in the times of the Old republic when emotional attachments were not allowed assassins hunted Jedi by taking down those things that they cared about. They used their attachments to turn them to the Dark Side. And these were often minimal attachments, a Dark Jedi of power could easily turn many people to his cause. Far moe then any Dark Jedi or Sith Lord in ancient times could have because it would take less persuasion to do so.
