an old saying goes "you are what you do."

this new saying totally turns the old one on its head.
If everybody has one talent but they aren't making use of that one talent then they aren't living. That is what I think the quote means.

you are misconstruing what I said. If you are good at playing music then you should be a musician. If a person is good at sewing but they are stuck working as a lab technician they should be sewing

that sort of thing

I was even gonna add the qualifier "Do what you are as long as it's good," but then we could get into debating what's "good," as in "One man's steak is another man's poison."

Ideally, yes, if would be wonderful if each of us knew our special way we could contribute positively to the world and did so.
