Un chien andalou
quote: There are many films out there that have had a huge impact on modern film-making, and most people aren't even aware of those. I think that Luis Buñuel's UN CHIEN ANDALOU is truly one of those films.
I am a huge fan of the art of Salvador Dali. He was a great painter and above all he had the talent and the vision he wanted to share. It is widely known that with this film they didn't want to create something, which would mean something (even symbolic), and I take their word for granted. This short film is just a collection of images, gross and disturbing in their nature. So what it is this film if there is no meaning behind it? I think that art that tries not to mean anything becomes meaningful in ones mind (not in a much more general field, as there was not meant to be a literal message behind the film) because art itself cannot be seen through objective perspectives; if there is a perspective, there is always a rational person looking through that certain channel. That said, the purpose itself isn't common any longer, it is far more personal than anything else in art itself. So I am entitled to say that this film means something to me, also. When there might not be a certain meaning behind the film, I consider it as a useful guide or parallel; it is one of the earliest flag-carriers of Avant-Garde and as we now know because of Gaspar Noe's IRREVÉRSIBLE (8/10), shock cinema. This film might have been shocking way back in 1929, because I found some parts of it extremely disturbing. Yet I think that this film becomes a parallel because it shows how much the cinema has evolved during 75 years; we have seen brutal and insane violence around us and films like these do not affect us so deeply anymore, because violence has become a tool of marketing, it has become a way to express the minds of entertainment; it has become a value of entertainment itself, without necessarily leading into more profound conclusion of the nature of violence itself.
I think one of the most fascinating thing about this film is that it pretty much has no meaning behind it (Buñuel has even said that he laughs at the people who try to figure it out), only the meaning we create for it because we interpret it the way we see fit, and if it becomes personal, it has succeeded to provoke an emotion and art is in its fullest form and glory when it provokes you to think even then if there is nothing to think about.

OMG yeah. Ugh!
And that Cabin fever one with the shaving of the legs.
Also, Jesus' beating in Passion of the Christ was unbearable, especially with the whip that rips his skin off.

Any given sunday- Where an american football player has his eye ripped right out of the socket, that made me wince n mess with my eye lol.
In misery when that woman is keeping that author at her house and she puts concrete next to his legs n cracks em with a mallet, that's awful, another one where you wince n start like tensing your legs.

That girl in The Ring was disturbing.
In Cabin Fever when they opened that shed door and it shows that girl's rotting body. Actually... pretty much ALL of Cabin Fever was disturbing...
In Gothika when it showed that guy kill that girl after raping her. And the part when they were showering and that girl shows up... *shivers*
That one guy's hand in Scary Movie 2 (esp. when he's serving them food *gags*).
The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre was extremely disturbing! Especially when Leatherface puts that guy on that meat hook when he was still alive. *shivers* The worst part about all that was the fact that it really happened.
That's all I can think of for now.
I know, im disturbing. Im Samara's twin.
You thought the "meat hook" scene actually happened?
Well..Ive like, actually not even heard of 3/4 of the films mentioned in this thread, and some of them that I HAVE heard of, I havent seen.
I have yet to see a very disturbing scene. I guess the video tape in the ring was kind of freaky, and the girl in the closet. Other then that...........idk.
