Now to contradict my earlier statement....
I just want to explain my feelings on this anime. First off, I don't think it was all it was cracked up to be. I always heard how great it was, but it...isn't all that great. Odd fact I just wanna throw in here, the 1st episode I ever saw of it was waaaay over a year ago on Adult Swim one night..and that was the last episode.
Anyway, back to my rant on how it doesn't live up to the expectations I had for it. The characters were something else. But, you never got to feel for them or anything. They were flat, unlikeable characters. Usually I feel "connected" to the characters in some way, not with this. I saw flat emotionless characters. It was cool figuring out their respective pasts, but when you get right down to it...they could have done so much more with character development. I hardly felt any remorse when Spike was killed/died in the end. I was like, wow...I just don't feel it. The one character they gave abit of life to was Faye, she cried and was sad that Spike left. The rest seemed so distant and uncaring..
Now onto plot, was there one? I think they could have summmed up the important issues in three or four episodes. Cept they dragged it on and on with pointless episodes. I swear I was trying to figure out the point of this whole anime the entire time. It was amusing to watch some of their antics, and I did enjoy watching Ed.
I think I've done enough bashing. I'm sure many Cowboy Bebop fans are ready to slit my throat right about now...but this is my personal opinion. So I'm entitled to it

i understand your point-of-view on cowboy bebop sai12. truelly, this anime could have been summed up in probably...6 or 7 episodes, no lie. [example] 1st ep. introduce spike and jet [u kinda dont even really need jet tho, to tell the truth]. 2nd/3rd eps. ballad of fallen angels [i think there were 2 parts to that ep. *sry im lazy, i dont feel like lookin' it up right now*]. next 4th/5th eps. [tho these eps. can be judgemental, you could probably get away w/ not showing these 2] jupiter jazz part 1 and 2. and finally 6th/7th eps. the real folk blues part 1 and 2. honestly, in this show/series u can watch ALMOST all of the episodes out of order except for the ones i just mentioned [***now thats 7 episodes out of 26***]. but you have to really think, this show at least has a beginning, middle, and an end [and it's short and sweet].
now with the characters, i might have to disagree with you, just a little bit. starting off with spike, this show was based entirelly around him, so there's no doubt that u had to have some type of 'feelings/connection' for him. they told you from start to finish about his story and how he became what he is and what he was searching for the entire time [now i cant absoultely say that i agree w/ how they did everything towards the end b/c in my opinion, it kinda seemed like they were trying to cram everything into the last 2 epsiodes...vicious coming back, spike meeting vicious again, julia coming back, julia dying, spike and vicious fighting and dying]. now with all of those episodes that they threw together, they could've spread all of that stuff in more then 2 episodes [*thats just my opinion*].
then there's faye, now they did explain her story and she was one of those characters that i felt that you did indeed need her, but then again maybe not. but the reason why u 'did' need her was to try and pursue you into thinking that 'maybe spike will stay and faye will change his mind', but thats just hopeful thinking b/c to make this story work, spike HAS to die...no questions asked. [this reason is b/c he was a lost and dying soul from the beginning of the series, it was like he was in purgatory and until he found out everything he could not rest] **the movie kinda helps the series out a little**.
now jet, he was there to kinda represent spike's conscious [to give him advice, but it's up to him to use it or leave it]. then there's ed and ein [COMIC RELIEF that is there purpose and if u add faye in there, it tells/shows you more about spike's personality on how he is and what he doesnt like].
now for the point of cowboy bebop. if you watch those 7 episodes that i listed ^up there^ thats the point of cb [to lay a lost soul to rest and bring him peace *kinda...i think?*]. if you listen to spike's story at the very end of the seires/last episode, about the 2 cats...that is the story behind cb [he tells you it right there]. all of the other episodes are just for the watchers amuzement [again the movie also helps explain some/a lot of cb].

Course if I completely hated it I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't have finished it. I am just saying it wasn't as good as I was led to believe. It was good yes...but I still say the character development sucked. I know it was Spike's story and all...but we never really even got to see the "real" him.
Anyhow, I saw the movie before I saw the series. Its the whole reason I bought the series.

I got to see the U.S premier of Cowboy Bebop the movie at Anime Expo 2002 (I think that was the year). Very wicked.
Since the very first time I saw it I decided it was the best anime series I have ever seen. I dissagree with some of the statements above above about shallow characters and no development and that it could have been over in just a few episodes.
You learn more and more about the characters with every episode and they do have depth and emotion. The story line build with every episode. You continuosly learn new key points with every epsiode that all lead up to the conclusion. They are not always clear but they are there.
The animation is top notch and very well done. The soundtrack is awesome.
I remember the first time I was exposed to Cowboy Bebop was by a fan music video put to the Linkin Park song "In The End". I was hooked from then on.
