Paola's doll

Hmm- I'm kind of in the middle.
__I LOVE the idea of a highly intelligent symbiote- that's what is SO different and alien about these things.
__I also like the story-line of the V-sym being considered defective and criminal by its species, for wanting to partner with its hosts.
__I kind of imagine the species as being unbalanced. Their intelligence took them to the point where they adopted a culture that was in opposition to the rest of their nature. It makes intellectual sense to take control of hosts. However, you can't easily jettison a genetic heritage, in favor of a better "life-style." They had to work hard at supressing any atavists, such as the V-sym. If I'm recalling correctly, the Beyonder found it in a lab/prison.
__That's probably the last thing that really connected with me in canon.
__I loved the thought of it escaping to earth with ivory-tower ideals of a return to a more "natural" state- ideas that it never had the chance to test. So, what does it wind up with as its first host? Peter. It reveals itself slowly and cautiously, and it gets soundly rejected by him. God, that would make you pretty f~cking raw.

__And Nemo, I do like the addiction idea. Actually, I think it's been there all along, somewhat...and other people have definitely picked up on it. Dyce had a funny take on it in "Psycho-analysing My Symbiote;" have you read it? It was tongue-in-cheek, and quite cute.

I posted in the General Fiction area and no one answered; Paola, forgive me smile.
quote:
Hello all, this is my first time posting here (I think this is the correct forums for this sort of thing, even though what I'm posting isn't a story).

I really enjoy writing, but I can't seem to get a story to 'stick' with me, and I came up with an idea for this on vacation. The idea was spurred after I saw the movie Constantine and I was wondering if you all could give me a little help.

Basically, the story is going to be about a fellow who lives in a grungy city, knows a little magic, and does a Mulder and Scully thing with reports of the paranormal (or just plain odd).

However, I can't exactly solidify the plot. I'm thinking of doing something with werewolves, but the conflict is rather hazy. Any help here is appreciated, even if it doesn't involve traditional things (i.e., werewolves, vampires, etc.).

One of the main problems I am having is steering away from clichéd magic. I don't want some doofy Harry Potter wizard (sorry fanboys, I like the series but I don't want my character to end up like Ron) or some idiotic Wind-Water-Earth-Fire elementalist. I am trying to devise a means by which I can implement magic without it seeming as the 'same old' thing or being too hashed together (if any of you have played Ultima Online, you'll understand what I mean).

I would like to do one of two things with the story as well:

1. Create a series of short stories with the main character remaining the same, telling about his exploits and "cases".

2. Write a larger story--possibly a book (don't laugh at me, I'm not talking about a Stephen King-esque work--that doesn't, well, suck. Meaning that the plot would have to be expansive and cohesive, which may be difficult.

Thanks for your support!

(NOTE: THIS IS NOT A "FAN FIC".)

__Maybe do it as a Lovecraftian story, Feceman. I like the Old Ones and the twisted heritage they have left the world. Lovecraft himself had an inspector who had stumbled onto the truth, and used him in some stories. It's probably the inspiration for Constantine- so check out the source! A lot of authors have written about the Cthulu Mythos "world." It's a popular place to play, and you can create all sorts of monsters, hideous situations, dark plots, and evil "Gods."
__Actually, the gods really seem to be members of various, ancient species whose technology was a sort of magic. It's said that they were defeated by the Christians, but they are plotting to re-take the earth. Lovecraft's inspector was always just managing to divert a catastrophic breach of the Old Ones' imprisonment.
__The funniest thing about the Cthulu Mythos is how most humans go mad at a glimpse of the truth. The Gods are not only hideous and hostile, but so is the universe that they ruled for so long, and had such a hand in shaping.

This is a pic of Angelo Fortuno wearing the symbiote but Mac Gargan looks just like him with the symbiote so...

Did anyone else pick up "Toxin" today? The writing wasn't that great. The art reminded me of some of the old Venom minis. I posted some scans in the Toxin thread: http://www.killermovies.com/forums/...539#post3606539

You know, I really.... don't think I like this.

It looks stupid to me, it really does. I dont know why, but it does. I like neither the art not the writing.

I am not totally writing it off yet, but this sample is not impressing me. At all.

Toxin just doesn't have the look of a true symbiote to me, and I agree with you completely. He just doesn't look...right.

There was a couple good jokes about the villan, but it was mostly crappy.
I'll buy the next couple just in case it gets better. But my hopes aren't high.

It's always been a touchy thing, visually- I mean, a mass of tendrils is a kind of interesting aspect. However, the placement in the mid-section just doesn't work from a lot of angles. I like it when it looks JUST a bit like exposed viscera. At other times, yes, the look breaks his form apart and gives him an awkwardness. He just doesn't look capable of strength at those times.

possibly but i still think that toxin is a inferior character i mean the idea of carnage havign a spawn has potential and then they have to *uck it up like this they could have turned carnages child into a serious monster or bonded it with a villain instead of bastardising the venom name by having the venom suit whore it around with other villains

(Yay i said something of importance)
