You can wait until early next year, like the Spring, to get them for free with the next round of new maps are released.
And there is one map that you can purchase that allows you to mess around with it and create your own maps. Other players can play on User Created Maps for free.

Dunno, but I'd guess that it's a lot like Gears of War, were if your friends have the maps and you don't and they go to play it you're automatically kicked out of the party.. But yeah the maps are pretty fun, dunno if you'd find them cool.
But whats cool about that labrynth map is that everything can be changed in Forge mode.
It seemed funnier to me, though, because I have not played Halo 3, so I didn't know most of the words said by MC were from the game. Had I known that it was before I watched the video, I wouldn't have found it as funny.
I did know the voiceovers from Halo 2, still.

Rat's nest is my favorite. I love the fact if you run outside you will run into warthogs, mongooses and ghosts eager to maw/shoot you down. Its very crazy. I also love the fact that if you go through the middle of the map it plays like a regular vehicle-less map. In-door vehicle madness is fun. Standoff is sweet as well, but IMO the Warthogs dominate too much...then again the laser is there for a reason. Foundry comes 3rd in my book. I appreciate the Forge madness, but as a Bungie map I find it somewhat subpar.
As for playlist updates I am glad team Hardcore finally made it. Time for some MLG madness!
my fave is standoff as well.. the whole art theme / landscape is just awesome
my least favorite was rats nest as well.. the design of the map looks like they could have done more with it (like add vents or some other alternate routes)
the only thing that saves foundry is that you can move all the boxes around
