Well... you had time to develop an emotional tie to Johnson. One may have gained enough of an emotional tie to Dom... if it weren't for the fact that Epic couldn't develop a truly well-rounded character if their lives depended on it.

If you were a soldier who had to find his wife and when you found her, she's all messed up and you have no choice but to shoot her, would you still feel okay? Probably not.

Were it your wife? Probably not... because you had time to develop a relationship with said person.
Was there time to develop emotional ties to maria? no... she was in the game a total of about maybe 10 minutes... not alot of time to grow to care about a character.
You want a death that you can truly laugh at? look no further than Ben Carmine.

You don't have to give a crap about Maria but you can feel bad about Dom. He's been looking for Maria and his search ends after killing her. Now he feels depressed throughout his life.

Yea... Dom... Did I mention that Epic couldn't create a strong emotional connection to a character if their lives depended on it?
Dom was nothing more than a whiny b!tch through the entire game. I liked him in Gears 1... but he started to annoy me almost as much as Baird in Gears 2.

Hey, were it not for Baird, Gears of War wouldn't have any humor in it and also, who's gonna give bombs the extra fire power and who's gonna repair vehicles while you're driving in them, Cole? Fat chance.

They could but JACK is too busy downloading data and unlocking doors.
I almost forgot about Cole there. I lol'ed so hard when he interrupted the Locust Queen's speech.

I will give Gears this: Cole interupting the Locust Queen's speech was funny.
but anyway...
I think the best quote I have seen pertaining to gears 2 (and gears one... and Epic in general) is this:
"Most of Epic's games revolve around testosterone fuled steroid monkeys that don incredibly bulky armor suits fighting off some unknown abhorrent foe."
