There wouldn't be evil if not for good. So the root of evil would be good, or the other way around. Bottom line is that without good, evil would not exist. Beings would just be, without moral standpoints.
The ability to either good or evil comes from free will, which is either a God given gift or by nature acquired. Does not matter, for it is all the same.
Whatever the definition of evil, it's a concept thought up by man. Without man, there would be no evil.
As thin as it goes, evil comes from man and the need to name everything we know. That and the current norm for right and wrong.

"The Daemon lied with every breath. It could not help itself but to deceive and dismay, to riddle and ruin. The more we conversed, the closer I drew to one singularly ineluctable fact: I would gain no wisdom here."
There's no such thing as evil. Only moral and immoral. Ethical and unethical. We immediately brand things as evil because they go against morals or ethics. But it may be a regular thing to the person or object that is considered evil.
There are many different levels of morality and ethics. The thing is, these days a lot of people automatically consider things ethically and morally correct. For instance, sex. Sex is considered moral when both are at the age of 18. But if one is 18 and the other is 64, we immediately consider this immoral because of the age gap. We think of the older person as "an evil person taking advantage of such a young thing". But the point is this is one of the things that are inputted into our brains almost immediately after we learn about sex.
So, in essence, evil comes from morality and ethics. And those have been utterly messed up.

Just because it is subjective, does not mean there is no such thing. Someone evil is generally a combination of several immoral traits. For that matter, morality is just as loose as evil, so you can not really say that it is immoral and not evil, since both are subjective
Of course evil comes from morality and ethics. Morality and ethics are the fundamental philosophies of right and wrong. Good comes from this as well. When I see someone help an old lady over the street, I do not think of him as morally accurate. I think of him as good.
For that reason, good exist. If good exist, so does evil. Just because it is a "human word" and a branch of morality, doesn't mean it doesn't exist
