Well that is one interpretation....

Though most feel scripture means that the disembodied spirits that are in heaven will come down at the same time the people who are still livings bodies will change into new bodies, eternal ones...and meet in the air with Jesus...."The will meet in the sky in a twinkling of an eye." Only the believers.....and depending on your view, the rest will go through a terrible tribulation with the antichrist, and may get another chance at his second coming, OR will be forever doomed.. reading

I belive the orginal interpertation was taken as literaly rising from the dead.A lot of Gnositics ridiculed Christians for beliving they would actualy rise from the dead.If you read the Gospels they have different opions about this too.
