sweeney todd is actually one of Burtons movies he made based on already proven material he didnt f**k up.Burton does his best stuff when he does his OWN material but for once,he actually made a movie loyal to its source material.I have seen the play and the movie was very loyal to it.which again,is an amazing feat for Burton.the play isnt that good so i could have told you,you would feel the same about the movie.LOL. I knew this would be one movie based on proven material that Burton wouldnt be able to f**k up as he usually does because violence and a bloodbath which is whats in the play,is right up his alley. He's a real pervert so Sweeney Todd was the perfect material for him. laughing

"Stacy" (2001) -

"I watch a lot of the less popular movies because you never know what you'll find". A direct quote from my co-hort, Sandy, at Hollywood Video. With those words of wisdom firmly planted in the back of my mind, as always, I didn't think twice about picking up "Stacy" from the pawn shop this afternoon. $3.99 being the main reason, I was sold on the zombified Japanese school girl, dangling eyeball appliance tactfully edited on the cover art with a "paper rip" effect. $4.20 to the clerk, dash through the door, and it's mine.

"Stacy" is a RomZomCom, manga style, where the country is dealing with an unprecidented epidemic. Girls aged 15 through 17 are overwhelmed by "NDH", or "Near Death Happiness". Serving as a bold social allegory, picked up on later, once this mysterious euphoric state expires, the girls become good old fashioned flesh eating zombies. Families are urged to put their daughters out of their misery before re-animation occurs, going as far as chopping them up and leaving them for the RMKS, or, the Romero Repeat Kill Squad. Meanwhile, in a laboratory cum girls art school, a mad scientist tries to unlock the secret behind the reanimation process. A love struck soldier, whos girlfriend became a "Stacy", a namesake carried over from the plagues 1st victim, unleashed the brood upon the city, and carnage ensues.

Upon first glance, this film looks like a pedestrian fan-film with zero credibility and a lofty storyline. Schoolgirl zombies that materialize from a phantom epidemic? It's not until the stories conclusion when we're able to acknowledge the directors true plot. Love, the lengths we go to maintain it, and learning when to let go. The girl, once smiling and giggling, now reduced to a rotting meatchopper. "If you love them, set them free", which is what's not so nonchalantly suggested by the "Repeat Kill" method of hacking the zombie cuties into 162 pieces. In the spirit of parody, Tomomatsu, throughout the film, hams up the whole "schoolgirl" fantasy to a whole new debauched level. Ask yourself; are they just as desirable with their spinal cords visibly being ripped from their bodies? Didn't think so.

While the bittersweet love story is lurking below, we're treated to a smorgasborg of gore drenched window dressing. Namely, horror film in-jokes and sight gags. As mentioned before, there's the Romero Repeat Kill Squad, who dispose of the 162 piece zombie jigsaw puzzles. Did I forget the "Bruce Campbell's Right Hand 2" chainsaw device, the preferred method of dismemberment. Not to mention a great disembowlment a la Rhodes in "Day of the Dead". Lest we forget the "Drew Illegal Kill Squad", headed up by a gun-toting Drew Barrymore in "Scream" look-alike. All female, glamorized to get across the infatuation with said characters, and call out the social ill in lusting over innocence.

"Stacy", thankfully, was a gamble that paid off in spades. A swift 80 minute film that kept me entertained the whole way through, coupled with a smart, stinging, and eye-opening social commentary, in grand Romero style. Toss in some absolutely incredible special effects, some gut-busting pokes at the Asian culture, the familiar classic American horror film nods, and you've got another unique J-Pop horror gem with all the obscure humor of "Suicide Club" and the punch of "Junk".
Oooo, a novel.. big grin laughing out loud

who said Sweeney Todd had too much singing in it? whoever said that shouldn't have bothered seeing the movie in the first place because like you said, they obviously aren't familiar with the source material.

just watched Sweeney Todd and it made me vomit a little bit. The set and costume designs are beautiful. The actors did an acceptable job with the singing, but there was far to much singing. The music was awful, i felt as though i was listening to every song sung in the same tune. When i wasn't falling asleep i was hoping for a break in the music so that i could enjoy some dialogue between the fine actors. I watched this film with my mother and friend whom are fanatical for musicals. Even, they said there was to much music. I could not distinguish one song from the next. They all, simply, sounded the same. this movie gets 8 puke filled shirts out of 10 clean one's.

If you found the music/songs in Sweeney Todd to be repetitive, steer clear of all Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. It sounds like you would have preferred a completely new take on the legend of Sweeney Todd rather than an adaptation of the musical because whole numbers were cut out of the movie, including a chorus. Also, a few songs that stayed in were shortened.

Is it the blood or the singing that made you vomit? You need to be a little clearer there. I found the blood contrasted so well with the grayscale tone of the movie that it made the blood more effective than it is in other movies. And it is about a killer. It's hard to have a movie about a killer and not involve blood. In killer movies, they either are about WHO the villain kills or HOW the villain kills. Since random extras are the ones killed in Sweeney Todd, focus has to be put on the razors and the throat cutting so the audience will fully understand the gruesomeness of it.

You should. You're doing a lot of hard work. Thank you.

Dragon Wars also D-Wars

Director: Hyung-rae Shim
Cast: Jason Behr, Amanda Brooks, Robert Forster, Chris Mulkey
Running time: 90 minutes
Rating: PG13 (Violence)

In time, there will be an Oscar for 'Worst Movie of the Year'. There is a very good chance a movie like this one will win.

Direction: I'm not quite sure if Mr.Shim was conscious while he was directing. Not a single line of dialogue was delivered convincingly. The actors are just as much to blame. But considering he was in the driver's seat he should have stepped up and done something, anything, about camera-work, continuity, direction of body language or facial expressions etc.

Acting: A lot of what I've already mentioned applies to the actors as well. It's amazing that the main characters were actually the weakest link in an already rusty chain. When the actor playing the main role can't even convey a hint of fear when there's a million-foot 'dragon' chasing him, you know there are problems. And that's true for the main actress, and all of the actors in the movie.

Visual Effects: There were scenes in which it was apparent that a toy car had just been thrown at you. There were horribly pixelated flames. Considering what video-gaming consoles are capable of today, it was an absolute travesty that two particular scenes were definitely shot on a 5-by-5 platform with a horribly painted back-ground.

Story: Yeah, ok. laughing out loud

Overall: Ironically, 20 years from now this might become one of those cult classics drunk fraternity guys watch for laughs. Steer clear of any time-zone in which a theater might be playing this movie. The best actors were the dragons, and they were horrible. Go watch a real cult classic for its effects and story, like the original King Kong.

1 out of 10

Damn, dragon wars may be the worst movie but i've just seen something that comes close to topping Dragon wars. The movie i speak is Mall Cop. This Movie was awful. It was boring, sour and stupid. Christ, i miss my stoner days. If i were still a stoner i would have gotten some enjoyment from pocking this movie apart one stupid piece at a time. However, i'm sober, so this movie blowed!!

Careful to leave one person alive to tell their tale, on down Route 666 they headed.

"Natural Born Killers" is an exercise in complete cinematic freedom. Literally no director in their right mind would combine the elements of "NBK" and think they'd come out coherent, much less find actors to pull it off. That said, Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are the ultimate acting compliment. Their chemistry was through the roof on this one. Another strongpoint was the dialogue, a fair amount written by Tarantino, the rest was Stone, given it was his cut of the film. Great supporting performance by Robery Downey Jr, as the overzealous "myth making" reporter, and the fuel for the Knox's media firestorm.

The glue that held together this incredibly visually stunning piece was the cinematography. Every single trick in the book was thrown into this one. Melds, psychadelic shading, freeze frames, color filters, warping, audio delays, gaphic ANIMATION. You name it, it was there, and made the film, frankly. It was a bizzarre trip of a film, one that seemed to change directions at the midway point, losing some steam, but thankfully picking up at the end.

If it's been a while since you've seen this manical masterpiece, treat (or subject) yourself once more and get a taste of avant garde cinema.

I watched this movie

This movie sounds good but it's execution was horrible. It's supposed to be about a serial killer hunting serial killers (ala Dexter). It however turned out to be the most utter piece of garbage I've ever seen. I'm all about low budget independent films and all that but this one just is too much. The plot was horribly thought out, the budget must've been 100 bucks, and the acting was horrible. 1 out of 10 stars. Avoid at all cost.
