I almost joined right out of high school. If I had, I'd have finished boot right about the time desert storm started. Odds are I would have been a rifleman on the front lines.

I actually had my contract signed and everything, I had a spot in sniper school set for me. But because it was such a bad injury, my contract was voided, I could join now but I am not even close to being in shape for boot camp and I don't think my knee would hold up.

I dont recall if I had signed like you did, but I remember being taken with a few others for testing.
My grandma and dad talked me out of it. Her brother Cecil, my uncle, had gotten shot up real bad at Guadal Canal (I think), and she didnt eant the same for me.
My dad said "Come work for me for a month, see what its like being an adult in the working world, THEN if you still wanna go, you have my blessing."
Well, one month turned into ten years.

Or you might be well on your way to being an officer, you never know. I could see you in a marine dress uniform, though.

It was probably different back then, being the early 90's.
I talked to a recruiter, 2 days later went to the MEPS in Cleveland. I took all the physical tests, filled out papers then I talked to someone about my contract. Then I swore in and went home. A week later I blew my knee out and my contract had to be voided.
One month into ten years is what usually happens with a lot of things.

That's the main reason why I wanted to join, I didn't do it for patriotism or because I thought the Iraq war was a justified war, I wanted to be a Marine plain and simple.
Now that it will probably never happen, unless I join up in a few years (which I probably won't), I feel like a part of me is empty. Crazy huh?

I was gonna Marine force Recon, man. I would probably have been in the shit.
I was hoping to get into being a mechanic, working on choppers. At the time I had worked a bit for my dad as a mechanic and had a flair for it. When they took us for the testing, there was a guy with a side panel up on a chopper, and he let me take a peek inside. COOOOOOLLLLL shit man.
