Yeah the book is more gruesome than the movie. Instead of just breaking his ankles she chops off one of his feet with an axe.

They portrayed the old woman in the bath even scarier than I imagined in the book

I thought it added a little hope for the characters. The film ending pretty much ruined the whole idea of them trying their best to survive.
