I believe I can be socially empathetic and put others before myself, yet I can still live in a manic state. I've done so the first few years of my life - then I turned into a rotten bastard. I was miserable acting selfish, I can't live like that. I need a conscience, because the benefits of altruism (of caring and being cared for) outweigh the risks of losing it all in self-centered psychopathy.
