A buddy of mine just told me yesterday that he's got a new book that just came out this week, and apparentely from page one it's already classic Chuck f***ed up. So...can't wait to read that one.
Was your username a version of Scribble back in the day too?
No, no, man, it's TGF: The Grey Fox. Hopefully you remember me, MG forgot who I was and now I'm starting to get worried that I never existed in the first place...
Yeah, Beautiful You it's called, I read the first few chapters on Amazon to see what it was like and it sounds good. It seemed to be written in a 3rd-person perspective, which is a first for him, isn't it? Not including bits of Haunted, I guess. His early work is clearly still his best (Survivor and Invisible Monsters? hell yeah) but Rant's good, too. Have you read that one?
That's me, sir. I got you on Facebook, I probably occasionally like things you post (ie Twin Peaks is returning, holy shit) but I'm shit with getting back into contact with people generally.
Yeah, that's more or less what I've read, with the exception of Pygmy and about half of Haunted. I've got Doomed, but I guess I wasn't that impressed with Damned so I haven't started it yet.
Choke's your favourite, though? That's quite an unusual choice, you're probs the first Chuck fan I've spoken to who's said that. I like Choke though, it's kind of a shaggy dog story but I think that's the angle he was going for. Some of the butt plug bits toward the end made me somewhat squeamish haha, but it's a good book. Denny is a cool dude in particular. Have you seen the film? I haven't, but it sounds way different in a lot of ways to the book. Sam Rockwell as Victor, though.
Pygmy was rad but it is definitely difficult to read since it's all broken english. Pretty exciting story though.
My favorite story rotates with Choke, Lullaby and Survivor. I've read Lullaby like 3 times, it goes by so fast. That scene where he's just walking down the street thinking the culling song at people? So great.
The choke movie wasn't bad per se, it was kinda tame, and Sam Rockwell is the best so I can get behind that. Not as fun of an adaptation as fight club.
Shit yeah man, when I heard that I basically did a really small poo in my pants. All nine episodes directed by Lynch, too? Yes please. I got The Complete Mystery box set for my last birthday but I still haven't seen The Missing Pieces, which is stupid, you'd think I'd have watched the shit out of it by now, really. Gotta get on that. Did you hear they were releasing a book to catch people up on what'd happened since the end of season 2 as well?
I've only read each of his books once each, but Survivor, Invisible Monsters and Lullaby are my top 3 for sure. I really want to re-read Survivor, though, it's been so long since I read. I'm so glad Chuck isn't just 'Fight Club guy' to me any more. And yeah, that scene in Lullaby is one that stuck with me, probably one my of my overall favourite bits in any of his books. I like the weird fantasy bend he went with in that book a lot.
Weirdly enough, I have a friend who actually started with Pygmy, not even having seen or read Fight Club or anything. The only other thing she knew by him was Guts because it was all over the internet at one point.
You should look up Jeff Noon, by the way. He's an English author who started in the early 90's and his first book, Vurt, is an absolute blast. He's got a great writing style, really weird but also really accessible. My username is a Vurt reference, actually
Yeah man! I'm way behind you, I've only seen reruns and binge-watched on Netflix. What I REALLY want to see, is that apparentely on one of the special features, David Lynch (as himself) interviews Ray Wise AS Leland Palmer. I saw a preview of it on youtube and it looked RAD. I can't wait for that book, I wish it was coming out sooner.
I know what you mean about "fight club guy." When I first got into him, I went to the bookstore LOOKING for Fight Club, but the only chuck they had in stock at the time was Diary. Then I jumped to Survivor and the rest was history. I'll have to take a look at this Jeff Noon guy, I've been knocking out reading like crazy this week, two books already with a third done by the end of the day. What kind of stories does he write?
Yeah, I've seen that, it's pretty good. He actually interviews Laura and Sarah too, it's ****ing weird, man. Not very conclusive, but really interesting. Then they cut the black and white and go back to colour and the four of them have a casual out-of-character discussion. From what I can tell, a lot of work went into that box set.
Oh Diary. Haha. The only one I couldn't finish... it really didn't grip me at all for some reason. What do you think of it? Damn though, you read pretty fast. I guess it's mainly because I don't have that much time to read these days what with uni, but even that doesn't excuse my overall laziness with books. I obsessively buy them and have to make reading lists so I can make sure I actually get through them at a reasonable pace, and even then it often takes me way too long... but yeah, Noon writes weird sci-fi inspired by cyberpunk, his first four books are set in the same universe, and they're all set in Manchester. It's basically a somewhat nightmarish world of crossbreeds (there are dog/humans, robo/humans, and a few other varieties) and general weirdness that slowly gets explained over the course of the series. The others are good, but Vurt is still the best.
