Also, who are you to tell me what I am and am not. I can be Italian and American.

Just because I don't have the accent, doesn't mean I'm not what I claim to be.

I was raised in America, my great-great-grandmother spoke nothing but italian, but she died before I was born.

That's not how it actually works though. By that logic you can also claim Etruscan or Roman or whatever. You're none of those things though. You're American.

My grandfather is Italian, my grandmother is German. I speak both languages and was actually partially raised in those cultures. But I was born and raised in the Netherlands, therefore I'm Dutch.

Does your passport say that you are Italian, Irish, Native American?

It's just as a European that is actually from one of the countries you Americans claim to be from, it's kind of annoying. You claim to be from a certain culture which you haven't really experienced. Most haven't even been to the countries they claim to be from.

This was the picture of my mate on the back of his memorial card at the service today

He was always getting his bum out
Love that the chapel allowed it. The priest or whoever he was that gave the service also told stories of him smoking puff etc that people had written

Totally cool of them

Really, I don't care if you like to say you have Italian heritage. It's just annoying when you say ''I'm Italian'', while you're clearly not. You're an American with Italian heritage.

I don't have to be part of the culture to be Italian, by default, when you are born, you have Italian, and such built into your blood, tests say you are Italian, I can claim to be Italian if there is Italian blood in my veins, its also annoying that you think you must experience the culture to be part of the bloodline.

Are you actually being serious? no expression

''Italy'' is a social construct, a culture, it's something humans made up to differentiate themselves from other tribes. It's not in your DNA, friend. Seriously, what the actual ****?

Ok, from now on, I'll be the awkward guy that says "I'm American with Italian Heritage"

or "I'm American with Irish Heritage".

Try to find a single person that says that.

No, they say "I'm Italian".

It is the normal thing to say, whether you were born in Australia, America, or China, if you have a lot of Italian blood, that is what you will say.

Er no, like I told you, I'm from the Netherlands with an Italian grandfather and I don't say that. From my experience that's a purely American thing. Claiming to be from a country you're not from because one of your ancestors was from there.

So, you say "I'm Dutch with Italian Heritage".

When people ask me what my nationality is, I tell them what my ancestors bred me from, I don't just say "I'm American", because they would then say "American isn't a nationality"

They would be totally right.

People that are born in America aren't American by blood, but you can HAVE Italian blood, or Irish blood, and tons more, America was never a starting country.

I say I'm Dutch. I don't feel the need to name all my heritage when I meet someone as it's completely irrelevant to the current situation. Also, that's the only nationality mentioned on my passport.

That is just retarded. You do realise Italy is a younger country than the USA right? The country that is today considered Italy was founded in 1861. Before that it were a bunch of city states and regions. So by that logic you would be Roman or even Etruscan? Venetian? Genovese?

Also, American isn't a nationality? So the USA isn't a nation? Please tell me what it is.

I second Slay's outrage, if not the language he uses to state it.

Also, you were born in America, yes? So it was a starting country for you. Along with most Americans living in America today.

Even if I agreed to your logic, it would mean ''Italian'' isn't a real nationality either.

Literally have no idea why this has become a heated discussion.

How does it affect you in and way what someone who you don't know, who lives in a different country, tells people about himself.

Why would you even let it bother you to that extent?

I mean I do agree. There are Indian/Muslim/black peoples that I know that if u ask them they will say 'I'm british' because they are. They're parents may have been born elsewhere but they are born here and are simply British. They don't deny or ignore their background but they are and always will be British.

But yeah I don't get why it needs to be a big deal. Who cares, it doesn't affect your lives. yeah say you don't agree about it, fine, but to go on and on.. seriously? Get over it. There's bigger fish to fry

That's my 2 cents. Please continue as I'm sure you will

In my personal experience, no one has ever said "I'm American."

The main reason it can't be used is because it has no official language.

It's a mixture of most of the races.

You can say "I'm American", but it might prompt someone to say "No, I mean specifically". For the sake of the argument, instead of telling them to **** off and mind their own business, I tell them my nationalities.

Also, no, "English" is not the official Language of America, it has no official language and it never will.

At no point did I say America was a younger country then Italy, I just said it was one of the younger countries.

This is an Internet message board, meant for discussion.

Also, I don't care what he tells other people. He told me that he was Italian, I told him I take issue with that.

What bothers me are his ridiculous attempts at explaining himself.

Who are you to tell me I shouldn't take issue with something?

You are the first person, I have ever met, or heard about, that he ever. EVER gotten remotely upset over something like this, if it was truly offensive, I'd have more people jumping down my throat then just you.
