I generally favour the n-dash but in my fiction writing I tend to go for the m-dash. Purely for aesthetic reasons. N-dash all the way for anything other than fiction, though.

Mis-use of hyphens is one of my few pet peeves with grammar/punctuations, mainly because barely anyone does it right, ever. Which kind of makes sense, because getting dashes is a bit awkward on any keyboard.
