men only have 1 "private region" that being the crotch area. and its almost never shown on screen. women have two; the breasts and the crotch area. of the two the breasts are like in every other movie. they are basically used as promotional material. while the crotch is also much popular a piece of cinema when compared to its male equivalent.
It really depends on the movie, and who is going to see it. They market to the certain people who want to see certain parts. Its business, nothing more.
I meant a "clear" shot of the crotch. Usually a man or woman crotch shot isn't even in the movie.
Out of all the movies I have on my bookshelf, I have about 80, I'd say only 5 out of those 80 use breasts as "promotional material." Most of the movies I own don't even have nudity in them and if they do, it is usually essential to the scene.

Not to mention the usage of the penis is for sex, and if you add sex to a movie, it can make the raiting of the movie worse. Then making it a different crowd go to the movie alltogether.
hmm i've seen quite the few female crotch shots in the films that i've seen. full frontal nudity in very clear view was like half the theme of Babel. Lost in Translation featured nude dancing asians too. Lots of nudity in American Beauty, when the guy is filimg the girl next door undress.
but he point is, there is farrr more female nudity than male ones in modern american cinema. which i personally think alludes back to the whole objectifying women thing. every female who's won an oscar has had to strip in one form or the other in the movie she got nominated for. its like a running joke.
hmm yeah...thats why pg 13 films have clear breasts shots. which i think is just bull becaues we all know 98% of the audience who saw rachel evan wood's breasts weren't thinking "mammary glands".. they were thinking "sex!"
Those movies you mentioned though, there is a reason those scenes were filmed with nudity. For example in American Beauty, when Jane starts to undress for Ricky she is showing that she is proud of her body and she knows that Ricky finds her to be beautiful. The whole theme to Jane's character is that she is ashamed of how she looks and doesn't think she looks beautiful.
PORN objectifies women, a FILM does not.

but regardless of context, which is what makes any kind of nudity in films acceptable while distinguishing it from porn, females go nude more often than males is all i'm saying.
sometimes its just baffling. like american psycho is based on bateman's sexuality. yet they always hint as his nakedness, daring only a butt shot every now and then. now compare that to any female sexuality driven film, like Babel or Gia. the actress walks around nude while the camera captures her from all angles.
